running in the heat

I live in the northern part of arkansas i been runnung my dogs both morning and in the afternoon . Morning time is 5o am to 10:00 am and in the aftrnoon from 6:00 pm 8:30 pm. I have alot of rabbits where i run. I ran this morning we had 4 good chases 4 different rabbits. What i`m asking is does anyone else still run there dogs in the heat and the summer time. thanks jimmy

Have to be realy careful with the heat. Most hard hunting beagles don't know when to quit and could run to heat exhaustion or stroke. I run the older dogs or very young pups early. Older started novice dogs I run in the evening or at night. My worry is that a novice dog might take off on a deer or fox chase late morning. Plenty of water is important. When it is warm I soak em down and when they get dry its time for a break, let em cool down gradually and soak em down again. Also have to be carefull about not plunging a hot dog in cold water. Cooling a dog down by placing cool towels under the arm pits front and hind quarters is better than just pooring water on em or tossing em into a cool creek or pond. Cool em gradually. A dog in excellent condition will handle it better than one out of shape. Have to be extremely careful with the heat!!!

Thanks touchstonebeagl ya my dogs are in excellent condition i haven`t had any prombles yet. where i run there is alot of water. One spot that i run alot is at a lake near my house i run there alot in the summer. What i`m worry about is the snakes biteing the dogs in case of a snake bite what do you guys do. Thanks jimmy

Yesterday evening me and dad went running and when we pulled up we saw a rabbit cross the road. I wanted to let my pup run it by herself and when I put her on it she wanted nothing to do with it. My dad put his old dog on it and he left the country. After the old dog tried it, we heard it doing its thing: a 3 foot rattlesnake. The rabbit had gone right where it was coiled up and we didn't know it until it was almost too late. So be careful when stepping into the brush. On the bright side theres one less snake we'll have to worry about.

YA. running in the heat don`t bother me
or the dogs the snakes is what im afraid
of . Haveing a snake biteing me or the dogs does. thanks jimmy

I still run mine. Usually from about 5:30 a.m. until around 9. Then in the evening I run them right behind my house for only about the last 40 minutes before dark.

I guy running with me last week had one of his old dogs get bit. I'm assuming it was a Copperhead, as they are the most common poisonous snake in this area. There are rattlers, but not as many.

He gave her Benadryl for 2 days and she was fine. This dog is 15 years old! Anyone else ever heard of that remedy?

snake bites

Hey justsandm thanks for telling me about the benadyl for the snake bites . I heard about that giveing dogs benadyl when they get snake bites just didn`t know if anyone else done this. do you know How much of the benadyl do you give. thanks jimmy

Well....

I really wasn't planning on hunting this pup I have and I'm a little worried about entering him in the hunt. He's a decent dog right now and capable of doing well but you never know what your turning your dog loose with. He's never tried trash but also has never been with a dog that ran any either and I'd hate to see that happen!

I guess I'll just put a tracker and a shocker on him and see what happens! Maybe I'll walk away with a win, who knows. And maybe I'll be disqualified in an instant!
