Puppy question

I have 1 puppy in Autumn's litter of 7 that doesn't seem to be growing. He eats or looks like he does, is always bellied up to the buffet, but he is half the size of the other pups. He is very lively when you pick him up, but you can tell he just isn't 'right' somehow. The other pups are all filled out nice and he is thin and narrow. Any idea what you think might be wrong with him or what I should do about him? He doesn't seem to be much bigger then when he was born last Saturday.

It must be getting something to still be alive. It could have some malformations in its stomach or intestines causing it to not process all the milk. It is really hard to know but keep weighing it and make sure it has time to nurse. This one may not make it but try to give it all the chance you can. I hope it gets fat and healthy real soon. Try to keep track of his urine and stool output if you can, you will have an idea if he is getting anything to digest. If the stool looks about like the littermates or is really different then that's another indication of what is happening inside him.

Whats their Age Now ?? I just wormed the 2-1/2 week olds with Safe Guard Goat Wormer .. I had a Male pup that was Slightly under the 2 other males and after the 3 days of worming he's almost back to the other males 1 oz to go..

I keep very close tabs on the Pup weights .. Spot check every Day and Official Weigh ins every 3 days. Just for my Records of Litters..

He will be 1 week old tomorrow. Too early to deworm. As for stool and urine out put, I have no clue, the mother takes care of that. They aren't pooping on their own yet.

If you think he is not getting enough food you can use a good iron based baby formula mix with a teaspoon of egg whites in a 2 oz bottle and supplement two times a day. Most females have a slow teat of week teat. you can also move pups around while feeding if mommy will let you and put him on a better teat. you may also want to look at his lower jaw young pups will sometimes roll their lip in causing a air leak and resulting in poor feeding habbits. one more thing to look at is inside the mouth newborn pups can have an ulcer on the gums that will cause them to eat slower. If the pup is not droping weight. I would just wait and see what happens they will make up for it when they get solid foods.

Hubby came home last evening after being on the road all week. He said that the pup did grow and the little guy sure is active. Maybe he is just going to be small. The funny thing is, when he gets away from his brothers and sisters and is motoring around and bawling, he sounds like a cat.
