Will having pups calm a female down?

We have a 2 1/2 yr. old female that TNT busting loose. She is super hyper and nuts as a tzetze fly. Your honest opintion, do you think breeding her and having her raise the pups will calm her down any, or will it be a waste of time?

I plan to breed her to my male, just wasn't planning it now. But anything that might put a lick of sense in her head and calm her down is worth a try.

Any thoughts?

Nuts????? Why would you breed a dog that you classify as nuts?

I had a dog that had attributes that I didn't like, but she was a coon dog. I will be darn if all her pups had all the attributes that I did not care for.

My new rule since then is if I don't want a dog enough to keep forever I will not breed it.

Just something to think about ... I know I have learned my lesson.

Not nuts as in loo loo, but nuts as in hyper, run 110 miles per hour in the woods and just generally over eager. She has many attributes that love about her, and a few quirks that I don't. The male I would be breeding her to is very calm and laid back. Top notch coondog and just all around easy keeper. Is she a coondog? I would say No, not by herself. With other dogs, Yes.

Can she and the male produce coondogs, I feel very assured that yes, the breeding would produce both coondogs and bench show dogs. Would I be proud to say I produced said pups, Yes I would.

i have had females that were very skiddish that breeding them made them tamer, but never calming in the sense of energy,

I got a female

she just turned 2 end of March.I'd describe her as bein' hyper also. Not to the extent that she drives me nuts, but still. But she is smart as a whip and will do anything in the world to please me.IMO that'sworth more than money. She's also a coondog. She's out of some of the top dogs in the country.Only thing I don't like(as far as huntin')is that she's very tight-mouthed on track. But will explode on the tree. Now, with that bein' said, after weighin' the good with the bad,I think I'll keep her.Not only that,I love her just as much as she loves me.She IS a sweetheart and one of the prettiest redtick females I ever laid eyes on.

i bred my female when she was 2.5. those that know my older female - she was very protective. for about 2 yrs after pups, she was a different dog - totally. but then the "old" ways returned. i think it will help but it will be a short term fix. i have bred her again (4.5 yrs later) and awaiting pups (fingers crossed). so i'll see if it helps again, but I didnt breed just to calm her down.

you may want to investigate some of the calming products that are available now.

All it will do is make her run around saying that those pups are getting on her last nerve .... she'll complain about cleaning up after them .. and probably run away when the pups are weaned .

Have you tried running her behind a four wheeler, it can burn up excess energy.

No, but I can turn her loose at the lake to run. If she is hunted hard 3 or 4 nights a week, she is much better, never thought of that. She needs to run the energy out.

And yes, if I bred her, I would want one just like her. She is a fabulous dog, just energetic.

With all due respect, how can you be assured that the cross will produce coondogs? Especially since you stated that she herself is not even a coondog by herself? There's a lot more that goes into breeding top coondogs than wishful thinking. I'm not trying to be mean.........just giving you something to think about.

Well her pedigree and his pedigree are very good. The dogs behind them are all very good. This isn't some slap in the dark. I have made crosses that worked and crosses that didn't. You are suppose to look at the grandparents and great-grandparents and judge the quaility from there. Anyway, how are you to know what a dog can produce, without trying the cross? Very few people can honestly say that every cross they made produced all GRNITECH and/or GRCH. If she wasn't a good dog other then needing exercise, do you honestly think I would pollute the coonhound world with more cull puppies? I have been raising dogs for 22 yrs. It was just a question on what you all think. And I know of a lot of females that weren't good coondogs, but could produce them. My male comes from a proven line of coondog producing dogs.

if you have the time you could put her on a electric treadmill or a horse walker to burn off the excess energy ,that would keep her under control as running at the lake might be good for her but ,what she might run into might want to outrun her and get a hoof/foot race going..

a friend said he build a horse walker out of a car rearend and a manual transmission and electric motor,he buryed one end of the rearend in the ground and welded some pipe to the other side for arms to hook the lead straps to..

plus the treadmill/walker will get them ready for the bench shows if you still do that....lol

yeah , if she's energetic ... excersize her and build her wind and energy up even more ..

... you got yourself a discipline problem , she just needs to know when it's ok to cut loose and when not to ... you'd be surprised what a dog can learn if they have the right teacher .

"And I know of a lot of females that weren't good coondogs, but could produce them."

This is one of the arguments I have frequently heard about breeding. My question to this statement is how well did those individuals produce?

We will never get past producing 10% decent dogs if we don't start getting more picky about what we are breeding too. This statement isn't directed at EnglishBabe, but at anyone thinking about making a cross.

Sure a non working dog may reproduce better than itself, but why take a chance on mixing those subpar genes into the gene pool?

Exactly Larry! And I agree with you English Babe, that we "need to look at grandparents and great grandparents and judge the quality from there". And if you breed the female you're talking about here, that is "not a coondog by herself", someday she'll be one of those grandparents/ greatgrandparents. When do we decide to break the cycle?

I would make an excersize plan for her. If you have a lake, swim her EVERY day, take advantage of that opportunity. Swimming is one of the best excersizes for a dog. I would also road her or let her run loose for at least a couple hours every day......All this along with hunting 3, 4 or better yet 5 nights a week. That should calm her down some.

Would be worth a shot and a lot easier than dealing with a hyper, 1st time mother plus a litter of pups. ...Cheaper too lol....

Good luck with her, some just need some age to calm down....

I would never raise a litter of pups in hope that it would "fix" anything. It will usually just cause you more problems.
