I usually let my pups run loose till they get to be leaving and not coming back for a while. This usually happens around 5-7 months. They have a house and can get to other dogs feeders and just basically raise themselves.

The one I have here now will be 7 months this week and seemingly has no desire to go anywhere. He just hangs out and as far as I can tell never leaves. Should I put him up or just keep letting him loose till he hopefully does start showing some desire to do something?

Ron... there's more to it than what you're saying here... I have experienced it myself...


Some dogs leave and go visit all of the neighbors for hot dogs and hamburgers while others go out and get treed somewhere or run something.

I would take the dog out at night and see what he does. He may just be a smart dog and realize he is to stay at home during the day and run all night. You never know until you try him.

The dog of mine John had would leave the second you let him out of the pen during the day... and i mean GONE... too bad he was just out visiting people getting into trouble and not hunting. He also would not leave your feet at night. He's 3 now and finally starting to go out in the woods at night.

I think leaving a dog run free as a pup is a good thing for them, however, has very little to do with what kind of hunting dog they are going to turn out to be...

Letting a pup run loose gives them the oppertunity to learn how to be a dog, probably gets them to start a little sooner and mature a little quicker.


I have had very few that didnt start leaving on their own, the ones that come to mind didnt make the grade...but it wasnt due to lack of hunting desire either.
