Ron... there's more to it than what you're saying here... I have experienced it myself...
Some dogs leave and go visit all of the neighbors for hot dogs and hamburgers while others go out and get treed somewhere or run something.
I would take the dog out at night and see what he does. He may just be a smart dog and realize he is to stay at home during the day and run all night. You never know until you try him.
The dog of mine John had would leave the second you let him out of the pen during the day... and i mean GONE... too bad he was just out visiting people getting into trouble and not hunting. He also would not leave your feet at night. He's 3 now and finally starting to go out in the woods at night.
I think leaving a dog run free as a pup is a good thing for them, however, has very little to do with what kind of hunting dog they are going to turn out to be...
