Dave, I don't think I can help much, wish I could, but Plotts are not for everyone. Fortunetly I love Bear hunting and got into Plotts as I wanted to tree bear and big mean walking type bears, and I got into the breed of dog that I beleived would do that for me. Now I've switched bloodlines of Plotts into what I beleive will do the job for me, its a long hard road to train a decent dog that can and will win in either PKC or UKC, especially one that pleases me. I don't hunt no me to automatic strike dog, that covers everything and anything, I want a dog that takes the tracks as them come by themselves and gets treed with a coon.
Our dogs have alot of faults and setbacks like anyones, most people wouldn't have a dog like Anne as she's short, she's black brindle has a mediocre mouth and chops on track and tree. I'm sure if you put your mind and determination to it you can train your young dog.
However if all River Rats blueticks start at 6 months thats probably what I'd be hunting.
Dave, you can beleive this or not it doesn't matter but in my opinion that cast we were in on Thurs at Plott days if Anne would been in that cast it woulda been a whole different deal as she'd made something happen, like getting treed and quick. However I don't ever judge a dog on one or two nights, the Bingo dog I picked up honestly hasn't showed me anything that some of my pups can.
Good luck with your young male Dave but remember you gotta start with something to get somewhere.
