Roading Dogs

I've got several dogs that need some major conditioning to prepare for some of the bigger bench shows this fall, and several people have told me they road their dogs for exercise. All I've been doing to condition my show dogs so far this year is walking them on the leash, and for the most part I can only walk one dog at a time. Between work and everything else I have going I can only walk them about 1-1.5 miles each 3 or 4 days a week. I've also been hunting one of my females when I'm at home on the weekends, but I can usually only get her out 2 or 3 times a week at the most.

Does anybody have any tips for roading dogs, either by truck, ATV, or even a bicycle? It's something I've never tried before, and I figure they'll either have to start doing that or learn to go on a treadmill if I want to get them in peak condition.

Roading

That is how lots of us hunt in the late fall/early winter (whenever there is no snow) for bobcats...

An ATV is the easiest way to do it.. I think.. Or if you have a bicycle you can try that... Also depends if you are going to do it on or off leash.. We road off leash so we need our dogs to listen very well to be called back easily....

Old roads with no or very very little traffic... Just drop your dog out and start going... Also do you want them to be in front of device you are roading from or in front of?

If it is behind just go and call them... You can bump or tone them with an e-collar if they get too close... but be VERY carefull for dogs trying to dive under a vehicle..

If you are trying to road when in front... Sometimes it is easiest to have someone run up in front with the dog and try and discourage it from darting down the sides... We always give them lots of "good dogs" when they are learning and doing it correctly...

If you know someone who has a dog that will road... Try and see if they will let you borrow it to train yours...

And remember to always always always be aware of where your dog is at.. It is very easy to run one over...

I use a 4 wheeler.. We have some big pastures here.So I dont do the road part..I used my astro once just to see how far everything was..4 times back and forth to the hay barn is a mile lol.....Then to the back 40 and back once is a mile..I just hold the leash and mine run beside me..If they are still rareing to go after 2 miles.I'll go more but this time a year 2 miles gets em pretty hot..Make sure you walk, trot and run them to make all their muscles work!

Roading isn't hard and doesn't take much to get a hound going. If possible your first time out use a pick up truck with someone sitting on the tail gate coaching the dog along. A couple of important requirments. You will need to find a dirt road with little to know traffic and roading requires your full attention. Wouldn't take much to run over a dog. I have both of mine trained to " Road " together in front of the truck. Reb pictured below is a power house. I swear I'm going to hook him to a cement block to tire him out ( just kidding). I started him by himself. Takes some patience. At first I would drive slowly with him running (slow pace) behind the truck and after three or four times out he adjusted to the front of th truck. I caution you with on coming cars. The drivers usually don't have a clue what your doing and the dog eeds to learn to work to one side.. I stay in the middle of the road which forces the on coming car to slow down. Never had a problem with anybody once they figure out what I am doing. The average speed I road is 12 mph.
Again in my opinion roading requires 110% of your attention to avoid any mishaps. I typically do this alone to avoid any distractions and I do it at first light 6:00 - 7:00 AM which minimizes any traffic.
Hope this helps

Jim

we used to road work our field trial dogs 2.5-3 mile a day 5 days a week. we just found an old back road with little to no traffic that was mowed down, also watch for rabbits, groundhogs, etc. they can run in front of you and cause your dog to cross in front of your truck. stray dogs can be annoying also. we always kept our dogs on a leash with our arm outta the truck, i kept the leash loose enough for the dogs to feel free but i also kept it tight enough that if something ran out in front of me i could pull up on the leash and the dogs front would come up (this helps control them). some field trial dogs would get up to 30-32 mph for 2 plus mile!! i think a nice trot going into a nice steady jog worked the best. be patient.... it's not hard to do. Good Luck

P.S As far as people wondering what your doing.... I had one older lady with a friend stop me and totally ripe my A$$. I had my boy with me that was 10 at the time so i kept my cool. she flipped out and threatened to call the cops. Never seen her again!!

ok i think you are asking more for getting them in to shape so here is a few tips. if you have a atv it best on the back run you a pole across the back rack let it stick out 4 foot out both sides run two chains down from both sides with snaps so now you can work 4 dogs at the same time.. on the back of the truck you can snap your lead to the tail gate cable and drive slow down the road. you can work two dogs like this with out running them over. or if you have a pond you can swim your dog next to the boat this works the whole dog and is easy on the feet. the feet get sore easy at first on the road. or make you a walker for the dogs one used truck rearend and electric mottor works great just like a horse walker. the tread mill works too you need a electric one put ply wood on the sides, a rail across the top with chain or lead run it slow at first they really like the mill after a few times. hope this helps you

The hounds that are not getting hunted heavy i will road them. To get in shape start off low, 2-3 miles and depending on there age and ablity to run(not all hounds can run a long ways) increase the mileage until the hound has a good work out. Couple of my good runners do 8 miles three times a week. I road them on the county road a 4:30 a.m. and they all are wearing tri-tronics. Be carful when trying to road more than 3 as they do alot of darting around.

I've thought about roading and I like your idea. I do alot of camping and in their first year I can treat them as a pet and let them run loose. After that you better be ready to go coon hunting day or night. Just my experience.

conditioning

hi jessica first off the feed you use has a lot to do with your dogs condition and muscle tone you want natural muscle and to get it you need a proper diet . some feed you can feed all you want and want get the look you want to win the big shows. i feed 1 and half to two cups of pupina pro plan performance. to each dog i have it figures out to be the cheapest feed i can use. and then i work my dogs in different types of ground some in just plain dirt and swim sometimes,, and then on gravel bur never on crushed cravel its always creek rock for crushed like some roads have will break down there feet. i like to rotate the exercise pattern so there muscles get all types of workout. swiming is great. i road my world champion female 10 to 12 miles a day and swim her for about 30 to 40 minutes each time rotating her for that gives muscles time too recover from work out . hope that helps if you need any info on anything just pm.. me. ill be glad to help on what ive tried and what has worked for me..

I see that you have some time restrictions as many of us do.
Have you thought of using a treadmill ? mabye on the days you cannot get them out?
I have done this and they take to it pretty well. Just be sure to never leave one unattended while on it. And as another poster stated swimming is great for them as its a low impact exercise. And great for these hot summer days. My dogs have learned the word LAKE lol

Re: Roading Dogs

A TREADMILL WILL WORK, BUT IT WONT EVEN GET THEM IN PEAK CONDITION. ALL A TREADMILL WILL DO WILL BUILD THE MUSCLES THAT IT TAKES TO RUN ON THE TREADMILL.

NOTHING WILL TRULY BUILD MUSCLE LIKE HUNTING WILL. ESPECIALLY AROUND HERE.

I HAVE SEVERAL VIDEOS OF ROAD HUNTING OUR DOGS. WE LOVE TO ROAD HUNT THEM. THEY SEEM TO ENJOY IT AS WELL.

EVERY ONE OF OUR DOGS LEARNS TO ROAD HUNT AT A YOUNG AGE.

Y'all all have some awesome ideas. I've definitely got to keep these dogs on lead if I road them. It's going to be hard to find somewhere really safe to do it, and if they're loose they're going hunting LOL.

Sara how did you train yours to run on the treadmill? I've heard most dogs take to it easily, but it'd be my luck mine wouldn't!

i tried roading a couple of times. live near the gamelands and the road was back in a ways, no traffic. worked for several trips and then the game warden stopped me...no ticket just told me that i shouldn't be doing that and that people may turn me in for abuse. (little did i know it was race wkend and they were patrolling!).

I now have a walker, but its been so hot in the evenings that they dont get it like they should. after sweltering heat all day and then an hour of walking, i feel bad for them.

feed - currently on proplan shredded (got a heck of a deal on it).

I know what you mean Cynthia. Whatever I do with them it's going to have to be really early or really late because of the heat and humidity. I thought about people raising cane if they saw me doing it too...guess I'll have to run them around our yard or take them over to the land I hunt.

I've been using the ProPlan shredded chicken and rice feed since I brought the girls home from Gerald's place, and I really like it too. I've thought about switching to the Performance formula since I've been hunting lately, but the way my girls gain weight I'm afraid they'll either blow up or act starved half the time (especially Gypsy LOL).

I'm in the same Walker DOG boat haha! It's getting out of hand...right now I'm two and two on Walkers/Blueticks myself, and planning on getting another Walker pup around AO. Gypsy needs to hurry up and come in so I can even things up!

I tried running mine on a treadmill, it didn't work out so well for me lol Prancer completly freaked right out when I started it and the other one well I think she'd rather choke then run on it.

In the heat theres nothing like swimming.
