Diamond Hi energy vs. black gold

I have fed black gold for 3 years and about 2 weeks ago my supplier quit and the nearest is 1 hour and half away. I can buy diamond just up the road tell me would this be an alright switch or should I drive the hour and half. Please need info.

forget both

Run to the nearest WalMart and get a bag of Ol'Roy.
If that aint enough for ya throw a egg on top everyday or so.
That will make up the protein.

I myself would never feed Ol' Roy. Frist of all my brother in law has english pointers and a year or two ago one of his best males started urinating blood, took him too the vet, he had kidney damage from the red dye in the food. Vet told them Ol'roy's has the highest concentration in the dye and to never feed the stuff. Secound dogs leave HUGE piles when feed Ol' Roy. We feed Diamond, have tried others but always go back to Diamond, hounds just seem to do much better on it. jmop

If you can fine it try Sir Johns. It has great protein and the dogs leave a small stool.

Well thanx for the die info bud.

Thanx thats good to know but I dont think there is die in the high pro formula. Also my ole man feeds maximum nutrition from Wal-Mart he says its one of the best with little stool. All I know is when I have somthin good and filling with alot of protein my stool aint to darn little. LOL, but than again I aint a hound.

I have always fed Diamond but a few yrs ago Black Gold was all the rave and decided to try it ,Well it was a bad mistake on my part. The only time my dog ever ran outta gas in his life was on this feed.It didnt take me long to switch back.I had to feed more Black Gold also just to maintain his weight.

That big pile of stool is from a larger portion of the feed being corn. Corn isn't too digestible for anything. I think most people have probably seen evidence for this in their own comode. Now imagine an animal that is meant to eat mainly meat try to digest it. I personally try to stray away from anything that list ground yellow corn as their #1 ingredient, or list ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, and some other corn products up near the top of their ingredient list. They all have corn in them, but hopefully they have more meat products in them than corn.

A half an hour aint too bad to drive. Maybe you should just buy a couple of extra bags so you don't have to make the trip as often. On the other hand my buddy feed that diamond high energy, and he seems to get along with it just fine, so it could go either way.

I fed diamond for a long time, but one of my dogs vomits every time I feed diamond so I switched to Black Gold. I could'nt tell anything had changed other then the one dog did'nt vomit anymore. Then the feed store stop selling black gold so I tryed Nitro. Has anyone else tryed it yet? I've been feeding it for 4 months now, my dogs look better and I only have to feed them 1/2 as much.

Joey, I tried a bag of Nitro, and I liked it OK. Well, so did my dogs for that matter, but anyhow...

If I could buy it closer, I'd probably feed it more. Black Gold is the best for the money (so far), and closest, for me.

By the way, how was the trip? Are you home now? I'm about ready to hit the woods again...

I don't think I can go Friday. It's still too hot for Jake, and he's not feeling well anyway. We might try it next week sometime.

Have never tried Black Gold but about 2 years ago I switched from Purina to Diamond Hi-Energy (maroon bag) and my dogs seem to love it and look very good on it. It was only a dollar more than the Purina and I read so much about it on this and other boards I had to give it a try and have been satisfied ever since. I have been giving $15.98 for 50 pounds at Tractor Supply but stopped at a place this morning that carries it for $14.40/50# (which is 59 cents cheaper than Purina dog chow) and is only 15 minutes from the house. Since I usually buy 3-5 bags at a time I guess I'll drive that extra 10 minutes and save $4.50-$7.50. My vet also noticed a big difference after I switched and always compliments my hounds on the way they look come shot time.

B&T OK

Make the switch you may be happy you did. I think your dogs could do well on a lot of different feeds. I tried the Black Gold 26/18 side by side with PKC 26/18. The Black Gold did not put weight on the dog and waste is like putty. PKC I could feed 1/2 and put weight on the dogs and waste was small and solid. So I am no Black Gold fan. I have heard a lot of good about Diamond and would try it myself. See all the polls on UKC/Prohound boards.

As far as feeding 26/18 during summer months , if you read what Vickie Lamb and several other knowledable folks write, it's lack of conditioning and hot weather that overheats the dogs, not the protein burning them up. You need to cut back and not have dog overweight. I can't tell you how many times I have heard the old wives tails warning against high protein burning up a dog or causing a pup to ruin it's feet. But I have seen dogs get run down, get chronic infections, show stress, and lower resistance to fatigue due to feeding real low protein/fat levels while actively competing.

Give it a try and let me know how you fare. Good luck!
