nuisance neighbors

I have one neighbor who continuously files complaints with the township about my dogs, which he says are violating the township nuisance ordinance. He solicits my other neighbors for their support but they will have nothing to do with him. He parks his Escalade on the road within sight distance of my dog kennel so they will bark at him and then he video tapes them barking and uses the tape as evidence to file another complaint. I added a letter I received from the township supervisor at the bottom of this post. Anybody else have this issue? How did you address it in a way that kept you out of jail? We may not have to worry about the anti-hunters eliminating
our sport.

Email from Richland Township Supervisor:

Mr. Lester,

I am sending you a copy of the letter presented to Mr. Braganini from the
township attorney which will give you a general idea of our involvement and
the investigations we have completed in the past.

We will support Mr. Braganini if he can produce supporting witness testimony
from other neighbors, but to date he has not provided anything other than
videos of the dogs barking which most likely was in response to his presence
on your property.

I believe that he will continue with these complaints and you do have the
right to notify the police and file a report to this situation.

We the township, have to respond to these complaints and do so within the
ordinance parameters.

If there is a time you need to contact me for further discussions please
call at any time.

ask your neighbor what he would be satisfied with. If he just wants them quiet you could use no bark collars or a bark activated sprinkler for a kennel full of dogs.
It sounds to me like the twp. is on your side at this point just by the wording they used.

I am a hound owner and lover, but I CANNOT stand dogs barking. If you live close to other folks they have a right not to hear dogs especially loud hounds barking all day. I have way too many dogs here right now (6), but you can drive up my driveway and not hear a sound. Each and everyone of them has paid the price of barking in the yard.

Either they get what they want, or I get what I want and I pay for the food.

The complainer lives over 1/2 miles away as the crow flies. I have neighbors on either side of me and across the road who have no complaint. I only have three dogs on the place and they are not bad about barking. My close neighbors have told me they have all had issues with the complainer over the years. He filed a compliant against one of them over a stray dog. He in fact did file a complaint against my dogs when I had them 75 miles away hunting. It has gotten to the point where any barking dog anywhere in the neighborhood results in a complaint from this guy against me. That is why the township has been reluctant to take any action as this guy has history. I have two hounds one is 10 and the other is 2 and a 16 year old german sheperd who is deaf as a stump. The only dog that barks at all is the 2 year old and she isn't bad. I do have a muzzle for her and have used a bark collar. I guess the 64,000 dollar question is: how much can a dog bark before they are a nusiance? All dogs bark some. Of course when this clown parks right in front of them, they will bark. And then he runs the video tape. I am ready to relocate.

sound like he needs a good old fashioned @$$ whoopin!! but you can't really give them out anymore without paying a price yourself. if you could record him on your property video taping your dogs while he was there making them bark you could press tresspassing charges on him and see how he likes them apples.

If you read between the lines, the township supervisor is suggesting that you should file a harrassment complaint with the police. This is a very good idea, as it creates a paper trail that he has been bothering you, and will become very useful if the problems continue.
Once this is established, it gives the township the right to label the guy a nuisance, and then they no longer have to respond to his complaints.
See if you can get a picture of him near your property, or statements from your neighbours that they have seen him there, and you have proof that he has been provoking the dogs to bark in order to harrass you.
At the very least, once you file a complaint with the police, they will pay him a visit, and that should make him less likely to continue to bother you, knowing that the police are aware of his tactics, and that is is verging on breaking the law. You have to make him the bad guy in everyone's eyes, and keeping a log of everything that goes on will be very helpful.
Laurie

This ol boy needs more to think about. If he had a tire to change every morning on his caty may take some of his time. It's always good to keep a keg of short large headed roofing nails around.

That sad truth is a friend and neighbor had to move because of another neighbor filing complaints about his dogs. When the police show up to investigate the dogs barked at police. He continued to get fined. He finally moved of by himself.

I'd consider a dog(s) that bark all most constantly nuisance barkers. Ones that just bark when someone comes in the yard etc wouldn't be what I call a nuisance.
All I can suggest is put a bark collar on them to make sure they keep quiet.

Put a tri-tronics bark collar on them. They will tell you how many times a day your dog barks. Keep a log of it.. Monday 7barks tues.3 wed. 6. and so on. That way when he says all day you can go to your log and show them.

I had this problem, township passed a noise ordinance a year ago, everything was ok until a motorhome dealer moved in next door with a outside speaker system for calls. Every time the speakers blasted so did my skuna river fred dogs, big mouths, They complained and then a township ordinance officer came, gave me a warning then it would be 75 and then increase from there, Had to put TT barkcollars on them during the day during business hours, haven't been visited since, then I made a complaint on the PA system which is now turned off...LOL
