Our Fisher(taxidermy)off topic

We finally got our Fisher back. We have her mounted on a simple board for now...someday she may be moved to a more interesting base...We'll see.
This Fisher was tracked by our greyhound for a distance. We had NO clue what he was so crazy for... till we found her. She died accidentally. In MA we are allowed to kill them if they're after our livestock. We cannot hunt them but they can be trapped by licensed trappers. Road kill or farm kills can only be harvested for fur with licenses by trappers. We got in touch with the state for a 1 time tag so we could mount her rather than see her go to waste.
I took a few pix but our lighting was the pits. She came out quite nice. UNFORTUNATELY... my bluedawg decided she is COOL...LOL.. so we had to hide her UP high. I'm wondering if he is going to TREE on the china cabinet later when he realizes she is in that room? LOL...

Here she is...
I LOVE this picture so it is first...

Here she is in the kitchen checking out what's cookin...

Like I said the lighting stank... the kitchen lighting shows the variation in her coat a bit better....
This picture is when we found her and shows her coat well...

It is amazing to think these are such crafty and nasty hunters. All tooth and claw. Those of you who DO NOT have them are lucky! We don't mind them since we don't coonhunt here... and don't have outdoor kitties for them to eat... We have to secure our chickens well for sure.
Enjoy... HappyHunting Heather and Bob

Possumzilla smelled SO GROSS... even alive.... that there was no way that GROSS huge thing would come in side. Looking back... we should have... HE was amazing! Not sure what body mount they'de have had to use? Baby BEAR maybe? LOL... I would have had nightmares... that thing was scary... and I'm no wimp except for spiders....

Possumzilla was 10 lbs heavier! LOL...

You made Bob crack up! Then he said "We should have!" Great minds think alike....

Very Cool Heather! I don't think we have Fisher in Ohio, we've got Mink that look like a mini version of that. Let us know if your bluedawg trees it!

It is driving him nuts... you can smell the stain on the wood and Bob is a dummy and let him SNIFF the mount... LOL... now the stain smell is driving him crazy... he'll be treeing on WOOD! LOL...
I am Pleased to say he did NOT tree on it. So far he has really only treed on real live coon... Makes me believe he WAS a good coondawg in his hunting home as we were told.
He has to go thru the room to go out to the yard and he is sniffing for it... but a bit confused.
Forgot to tell one son it was HERE...and he saw it out of the corner of his eye and jumped a mile...LOL... Then recognized what it was. HAHAHAa... Not telling my oldest son...when he comes home for a visit...he and his girlfriend may give us a laugh...LOL...

rich40s She is a little one. Pretty as can be. She does look like a mink compared to the BIG males we've seen on the game cam.
Makes me really miss my old greyhound... he died Jan 2008.... I can only imagine what that TALL thin boy would look like trying to get up to look at his old prize.... He had never tracked anything nose to the ground like that before....he went every step that fisher had taken winding thru the woods on leash... and was very proud when he came upon her! I was mighty glad she had died or.... he'd have had an emergency vet visit if he fought her! He was a great dog but man did he have a few stitches and staples over the years
HappyHunting Heather

Heather, nice fisher, they all should be mounted cause I coon hunt and they kill our coons..We have enough trouble finding coons in our area without having these killers around..

Hey Heather and Bob..nice mount!! They did a great job on it.

I agree about possumzilla...have you submitted those pics to the state? or to Guinness Book?

Next we'll see a show on Discovery Ch...they'll be in your backyard with back hoes, exumming the fabled possumzilla for scientific analysis. lol

That's a fine lookin fischer you got there. I've been runnin into them little demons quite frequently the last few years. I see a couple every deer season and usually tree a few every year now too. They can put up quite the chase. Jumpin from limb to limb and tree to tree.

Nice Mount !

Hi Heather ,
Nice looking mount. I have been fortunate to trap a few here in central Massachusetts. Several years ago I was getting almost 90 dollars per pelt. I found it tough to have one mounted given those fur prices.
The economy woes have dropped pelt prices considerably.
Given that , I might consider a mount this year.

Thanks for sharing

Jim

They introduced them in Pa a couple of years ago. They are supposed to be the only thing that will kill porcupines. They aren't doing a good enough job......

Very nice mount. I have to agree with a few of the posts and say they all should be mounted. Hard on game animals including fawns.

yeah, they will kill a porcupine, but I don't know why they would have to when they eat all the squirrels and rabbits instead. lol

Thanks Dudes and dudettes!

We are real happy with the mount. I have heard that they really do damage on the coon populations...and HELP with porkies(not that we have them here) I know we have TONS of bunnies, skunks, small normal possums(unlike possumzilla) a million squirrels...barn rats... FAT hawks...LOL so there is still a LOT for the Fishers to share with the yotes. Our town, Wrentham, is quite built up now but still a "small country town" for Eastern MA standards. We have lost most of the farm land but we are lucky to have a large chunk of farmland/orchard plus some town land(from 2 MA towns and RI as well) nearby so we see wildlife on our little farm and love it. There is basically NO hunting unless the farmers are out on their own land for deer or turkey so the coon here have a chance. I think a trapper would be in HEAVEN with the fishers because they are numerous. I can't believe that if we kill one on the farm it has to just be THROWN away! What a waste. I'd rather be able to donate the pelt to a trapper. I hate waste.
TT.... WHAT kind of skull did you find? You'll have to send pix to Bob so he can DROOL over it! Brandon and some friends found a whole deer skeleton in some woods they were filming a movie in(for school) so we now have a some what ratty deer somewhere around...LOL.. it was there a WHILE but you can see it was a buck.... small one. The kids(they are seniors in high school) were SO excited! LOL... City kids gone wild! But they'd have some fun going coonhunting... with all the horror movies they've seen we could scare the daylights out of them LOL... OH and NO- you do NOT want FISHERs out your way from what I hear!
Mike... You know Possumzilla was buried in a wire cage so Bob could try to get a good skull BUT... the frost heaves tore him apart... we do have a piece of jaw and a tooth or 2 if I recall in with the skulls... NOW we need to get a NORMAL possum skull to compare it if we find a road kill out front... Not gonna kill one just for a skull and I sure as can be will NOT cook a possum to eat...LOL... and I do NOT want a possum fur hat
All you loyal coonhunters need to Pray that you don't get over run with Fishers! Also keep working hard to protect hunting and trapping rights etc... in your states so we don't lose ALL our hunting lands.... It is awful sad to see open space become big houses(no comments on the Castle here Mike )....
Preserve and conserve and hunt! Heather
