AI Breeding

Anyone had any luck with AI breedings (fresh semen)? Our vet has been doing it for a long time so we're hoping they know what their doing. Our male is twelve years old, arthritic and just plain gets worn out so this will be a lot less stressful on him....Any input? The dogs go to the vet this afternoon....

Danielle

Some time ago I had female bred through A.I. I bred her to Jeff Woods and Tim Whitakers Juice Dog. It's a pretty simple procedure. If you watch how they do it you can do it yourself
the next time. A little advice make sure they give the female a lutalyse shot (fertility shot) before the A.I. is performed. If the vet
tells you its not necesssary take your female to another vet. I believe the fertility shot can even be given after the A.I. and still
be effective but don't hold me to that. I hope I've helped you.

Thanks for the info....I did a little googling on the lutalyse shots and not sure if I'll have 'em give her that. It seems that it can have some nasty side effects and affect future heat cycles/litters.....

What was your experience with it?

Lutalyse..side effects

Yea that's true.I've used it before trying to bring females into heat
and it screwed their cycles up but when I used it for fertility I had
absolutely no problem. They may have something that works better for fertility but I don't know what it is. Like I said once you've seen the A.I. performed you'll be able to do it yourself.

Once again, thanks for the info! I'm just curious as to how many have had it done....I've talked to several people that were really pleased and had great luck and some not so much.....I think maybe that has something to do with how good the individual is that is performing the procedure.....

Really been thinking about doing this with my older male. I've got two females coming in this week that we're going to try and breed to him, and I've got another that I'm waiting to come in heat.
Do mind if I ask how much the Vet is charging you?

Laura, my vet is charging $60 for the procedure, plus a $15 office fee for both dogs....I trust our vets a lot, they have always been supportive in our endeavors with hunting and breeding coondogs.....

We are just having the AI done, not progesterone tests, ect.....We wanted to get them bred and otherwise wouldn't have been able to so it really didn't make a difference if we had the tests or not. It's kind of a last ditch effort lol....

All you need is a rubber glove and a syringe to do it yourself.

Wow, that's not nearly what I would have expected. I'll have to make a couple calls to some area vets now. I wish we had a vet like yours around, ours are pretty crappy.

Just got home from the vet.....

To my surprise, a Progesterone test was included in the 60$ so that was nice. BUT, the bad news is that it was too late in her cycle....The vet said he believed there was little to no chance of her conceiving so that was a HUGE bummer. I guess we'll have to wait another 6 months! We may just have ol' Jebb collected and stored......

Good Luck Laura!
