Giardia

We suspect that our youngest pup, a three month old English female, has Giardia. She doesn't have her usual spunk, no appetite and mucousy, light colored-not bloody-diarrhea. She's also gassy which is typical of Giardia. I've seen Parvo in a few pups and this just not seem like classic Parvo. She is still drinking water but has not eaten any food today or yesterday. She threw up once yesterday but it was right after she got a big drink and was mostly water.

This pup has ran loose on the farm and also goes on big walks through the woods and fields. So she very well could have ingested some bad water, bird/animals droppings, ect.

We've decided to go ahead and treat her with Panacur (fenbendazole) once daily for three days and then again in 10 days, we gave her the first dose today. Also trying to get her to eat some yogurt and canned dogfood, but no luck yet. I've researched some other stuff like Albon, also used for Coccidia, anyone know where I can get some? I have the dosage table for Albon Oral Suspension 5%. Just need to know where to get some.

Any other tips would be grateful, and if anyone could share some experiences with it would help too. Thanks!

That's why I figured I'd go ahead with the Albon as well. It's used for treatment with Coccidia....

Giardia

I have a pup that just got over Giardia. Vet put him on panacur once daily for 5 days. During that time he also developed Coccidia and that was treated with Albon. Still have two days left on the Albon treatment. I had to get the Albon from the Vet, 10 bucks for 10 pills. He is eating fine now but for about 3 days I had to mix yogurt in with his food to get him to eat.

No problem. If you are going to give panacur you might as well give the Albon as well, it can't hurt. My puppy when from just having worms last friday to having a loose brown stool on Saturnday, to a loose grey bloody stool on Monday. That is when I started the Albon and he hasn't had a loose stool since Tuesday morning and has been eating his food with no yogurt since then as well. I think he got it licked.

Thank you so much.....Do you know if you can get the Albon at a Farm Supply or any place like that? My vet charges an arm and a leg for everything.....

I don't think that you can get it at the farm store. If you Vet is trying to charge you more than a dollar a pill for it you need to tell him or her that they are price gouging b/c you know that they can get those pills for less that .59 cents each.

If you really don't want to buy it here is a page about how to make it. I would just buy it if I were you, I do not recommend trying to make it.

You can treat for all Giardia & coccidia with using Albon (for the coccidia) and Panacur & Metronidazole together for the Giardia. (Use the Panacur once a day & Metronidazole twice a day for 5 days)
Nope all is a prescription drug that you would have to get at your vet except for the panacur.

I get my Albon from the Vet in liquid form, and it takes 5cc for a 20lbs dog.

Thanks for the info. We started her on SafeGuard (fenbendazole) today and we are going to get some Albon. Thanks again and please keep the info coming....

She still has no appetite, hoping that gets better as the wormer kicks in.....

I have given them baby food mixed with Pedialyte in a syrnge wen they couldn't eat. This will help to keep them from dehydrating, and it isn't hard on their stomach so they don't throw it up like they do can food. I hope your pup gets better it's hard to see them down like that.

Molly seems to be doing much better. We got the Sulfamethazine Sodium Solution 12.5%. Diluted it down for dosage for dogs (you mix it with water) and she really hasn't wanted any of it. This was after she started to feel better. She is much spunkier and has eaten about 3 Tablespoons of canned dogfood, 2 Tbs of pumpkin, 2 Tbs of yogurt with some electrolytes mixed in. She also ate a few bites of dry dogfood. If she continues to improve I may hold off on giving her the Sulfa. She may've just had a bad upset stomach....I will continue with the wormer though.....

Just thought I'd update....

This is how I cured mine.

Give metronidazole 3 times a day for 5 days. Metronidazole is same as flagyl, used to treat humans & is same as FISH ZOLE, which is used in aquariums. You can get the Fish Zole from Jefferies Vet Supply.

You can see a difference in pup almost immediately. Mine started acting much better within half an hour.

Use your own judgment in treatment of your pup!!!

Yes, thank you for asking! She started doing a lot better after I wormed her. I didn't start her on the anti-biotic because she was doing okay with out it. She is back to normal now and boy are we glad! She is one of the nicest pups we've had or that I've ever seen.....
