I had him on here last week, but I really do not think it is babbling. I hunted him last night and he did not act as bad. He still runs around barking to hear his self bark I think. He did tree a possum and help tree a coon last night. He is 8 months old.


Could I have some advise ?????

sorry but i think he is just a puppy, i know that some people think that they should be running and treeing their own coon by 10 months old, but i think that if you give about 6 months to every month of that pup's life, your 8 month old pup is still only equal to a 4 year old kid!! give him some time to be a puppy!

I am not an expert by any means, but I wold let him mature a little bit. If you absolutly have to hunt him, take him by himself. Might take a little longer to get him going but in the end you will be better off. I would say he is probably barking at the other dogs more than barking to hear himself bark.

Let that pup be a pup...I hunt with a buddy that has a walker bitch and for the first 6 months from the time she started hunting she was a babbler..I hunt Wipeout dogs so I know what your going though. Just set back and enjoy the ride..Watch your dog mature..Just be patient..But most important,,,Hunt the pup by itself.

dose he do it all night or just when it starts to get dark. i had a dog that would do the same thing and then i discovered he was drifting coons that were already up trees.

I agree he is just a pup, but........................... some behavior is unacceptable. Hopefully he grows out of it, if not I pray I never draw him in a hunt.

let him grow up and if he is real hyper try feeding him a different dog food. something cheaper,he may not look as good but he will lose some energy. you can also use a shock collar on him when you know he isnt running track. them rattle heads will make you pull your hair out lol.

He may be a high energy dog. Try roading him or working him on a treadmill before hunting to take the edge off.

Push comes to shove must behavioral problems with canines today stem from not enough excercise.

He is 8 months old, that is not an uncommon problem for a puppy that young. Bet he even urinates on himself too when he gets excited. Sounds like he is doing fine. You will get a lot of advice and some may cause you to get rid of a young dog that is running and treeing and could potentially be a nice dog. Trott.

i had a walker gyp that started to do that about a month after i started reely traing her... she would do it every time i took her out for about a week straight... so i layed her up for a short 2 weeks... i didnt let her have anything to do with huntn for those to weeks but i still played with her and whatnot...


after that she didnt do it any more... when she struck on a track - she struck on a track...

I am not goingto get rid of this male pup because he hates a coon. I will lay him up for a little while and start again. The problem is we do not live in a place where we have alot of coon. Matter of fact I dog has to hunt about 30 min to an hour , to stricke a coon.

Good advice, put him up a while and dont let him follow another dog untill hes a little older, if you take him out, take him out in the mornings when its cool and let him get used to the woods more .
when he begins to hunt independantly, you might take him with an older dog some. jmop

I believe if he was mine and you live in a place that you can, I would turn him loose at the house and leave him loose for a while, he will more than likely turn into a different dog. Ive had these before, I never lived in a place where I could do this but had a buddy that did, I would always take a couple sacks of feed with me and drop them off to him and he would keep them for me for a month or so, it really makes a difference in them. Good Luck

one thing i hate is a dog that barks too much on track,,,, alor of the time they make themselves look stupid no matter how many coon they tree

when a dog barks to much on ground, they normally end up doing something i call "SHowing their Ass"

i will totally take a tight mouthed or silent dog before a wide open dog




a shock collar is the only thing i can think of for fixing this

If you use a shocking collar on an 8 month old pup for barking out of excitement you are doing what you claim mouthy dogs are doing!!! Pup barking out of excitement is not an indicator of how much track mouth they will give! Just that their young & to energetic to focus at that stage. Taking them out alone as others suggested & letting them be a pup & grow up is good advice!

jon, i didnt read the fact he was a pup, i thought he was an older dog,,, already had pups like this

i already know a pup normally grows out of this(normally),, i am talking about an older dog,,,my female was super mouthy until i went throught and put a kill season on her and she got to the point she barely opened at all after a full kill season alone

Man Dwils,

Different strokes for different folks. I can not stand or tolerate a tight mouth dog!!!!!!!! I sell any I end up with very quickly.

I like to hear a hounds progress on track. That way I always know where they are at. There is no way my heart could stand hunting a tight mouth dog especially in Indiana or Ohio! Michigan roads are bad enough. When i can't hear a dog I am as jumpy as a long tailed cat in a room full of rockers.
