favorite kind of hound

this is not about breeds. this is a question about how you like a dog to hunt. I was just reading the responces on deep hunting dogs. now me I want mine to hunt out about a half hour. and checkin I have plenty of drops but alot of big woods with out roads. so lets hear wat you like.

I like a get gone, get deep, pass up cold tracks to go get hooked on hot coon type dog. I also like the hang 25 yards around me tree checker from time to time. 15-20% accurate, willing to take a gamble on anything from a japanese yew bush in the front yard or a big oak den tree in the timber. First tree type dog only, gotta get him on paper!!! silent to semi-silent. Must take fang pressure, and be willing to administer fang pressure in the right situations. 120-130 bpm, slobber slinger that screws his tail in the ground when he hits the tree. Thats what Im talkin 'bout.

I figured I would get all kinds of responces on how you like your hound to hunt. my woods are to big for a dog not to check in.

1/2 hour

You cut some dogs loose and when a 1/2 hour rolls around they may be 3-miles down the creek.. I want my dog too clear a mile section and IF they don't strike, that will be fine if they come back. but our coons are pretty thick, most of the time they won't make it 1-mile without striking ...

shelby There pretty thick around here to. but there are nites where they just don't move. And i don't want to get 4 to5 miles deep for one tree. not only that are wolves are pretty thick. so them get deep dogs seem to have more problems. where a dog that will check dosn't get in that much trouble.

One that will get as deep as it takes to get under a coon, take their tracks as they come, move them along and put the meat at the end of them.

I

live in patch woods country, so I have to have a closer hunting, walk hunt style dog.. They do me no good killed on a road.. The limited amount of bigger woods that I do have around can be hunted just fine by walk hunting a dog. They goota be very busy hunters, open on the ground and tree hard... There are some guys locally that have the go yonder type but they drive alot farther away to hunt than I do most nights.

I like an easy keeper! One who doesn't bark in the yard, and is neat in the kennel. In the woods, I like a hound that's not selfish, and hunts FOR me. I like a dog to check back in, so 15 minutes and they come back if they dont start a track...NICE! I like a smaller hound that's fast. We get allot of snow up here, so one that can run on top of frozen snow... 65lbs. tops is tough to beat. For voice, I like a nice mouth...bawl on track...easy to identify locate, and a nice chop on the tree. Deep sounding mouth is extra nice if you ask me. I want a hound that likes to be my buddy! Bold, take it easy kind of hound that just goes when you hunt em. I dont ask for much!

A SMART dog that isn't afraid to take a track and drive it out of the country. Hot, cold, wet, dry or snowy, it don't matter, they are putting a coon at the end of a track.

I know a few that are 90-95% accurate and just as you described. You think the bank will loan you an extra $20,000 to get your paws on one of those???
