I have a twenty month old black and tan male. Runs track good and gets about 100-110 bpm on tree...this is all with another dog. By himself he hardly hunts at all. Will hunt 15 minutes or so, give a little mouth on track and come back in. Hunt him with another dog, he will split tree and have a coon. With another dog he looks like a million dollars, by himself he ain't worth a dime. Any suggestions on getting him to hunt better by himself?

I had one like that I thank he was just lazy. He would come in and waite untill something else opened on track then go get in on the race. I dont know if the dog will ever get out of it?

He likes the competition. He doesn't have the drive to do it on his own, but does with other dogs. Some dogs are ultra competitive and only hunt with other dogs. We also had a hound once that wouldn't hunt well by himself because he had been attacked by coyotes.

I had a dog like that. He needs to be hunted by himself ONLY for now until he shines. You may find that he doesn't have it in him. He's been riding off the other dog and never learned to do it on his own. Mine never came around after over a year of trying everything, he's buried out back.

hunt him by HISSELF and if he wants to hang around ya put your boot in his butt also right here is where a garmin and tri tronics was made for, the garmin tells ya exactly what he's doing and a push of the tri tronics makes him decide that he dont want to be lazing around..jmho

Well the answer has already been given. Hunt him by hiself and let him know it's not fun to be around you.

There is a caviat to this, you can make a dog get out of your light, but you can't make it hunt.

The making them uncomfortable around you will only work on those dogs that really do have it in them to hunt, but like to be around you. If the dog just doesn't have what it takes it will just stay out of light distance and still be lazy.

The dog may never come out of it, but hunting him by himself is his only chance to.

That's why when I start a pup I hunt it 3 nights a week by itself and only 1 or 2 nights a week with another dog.

They gotta do it by themselves.


If he has it in him it will come out when you get him in the woods enough by himself and get him on some hot coons.

Try dropping him on some feeders see if he takes the track if he does personally i would shoot the coon out try that a couple times see if it drives him a little more (if you have feeders where you know coon are hitting all the time)

Try hunting him with a big lab or german shepherd dog. He will have the competition and should bust in there and hunt. After a while of that (him being the only one to bark or tree) he should get some confidence to do it alone.

Id try that before I whipped him out of sight.

If you have a large enough area hunt him alone as others have said when he comes back get in the truck and drive off. He'll either run by the truck for several miles and get plenty of exercise or get tired of that crap and break off and go hunting. Ive used this method on 2 different dogs and it seemed to work pretty good.

Take him with the other dogs drop them out and drive up the road about 1 mile away and wait to they strike turn him in the patch by himself, will usely strike a coon going to the other dogs once or twice with this and he will hunt by himself! Works well if you do this where there is coon, also I;v hunted them with pups that would go hunting but not do anything making him the dominate dog!

SINGLE HIM OUT,AND HUNT HIM ALONE. THIS IS WHY AS SOON AS MY PUPS START DOING WELL WITH COMPANY THEY GET A COUPLE DAYS AWEEK IN THE WOODS ALONE. JMO. BUT TO MAKE A TOP HOUND THEY NEED SOME ALONE TIME IN THE WOODS WHEN THEY START START DOING WELL WITH OTHERS, THAT WELL ASURE YOU THEY CAN DO IT ALONE AND ARE NOT ME TOOING IT.

BE CAREFUL WITH THE FEEDERS , AND HUNT THEM ON FEEDERS AND OFF OR YOU WILL HAVE A FEEDER BUCKET HOUND THAT WONT HUNT OUT GOOD . THIS IS JUST MY OPINION

Treat him like a pup, if ya ask me. I had a young male that wouldn't leave to much at all. I just went to a big old woods and sat on my butt for an hour, 2 hours, etc. however long it took. He got to the point that he laid down beside me. I just ignored him and he eventually got bored and started ranging out and hunting. Dogs do NOT have patience like a human!

Took him out earlier tonight. After about 45 minutes he went hunting and came back a few times. I went to a new place and I turned loose and ten minutes later had a tree. Got to the tree had a coon in a squirrels nest. I saw the coon's tail hanging over. Did better than I thought.

Definitley isn't the answer to get a lazy dog to hunt.It definitley isn't the way to get a dog that isn't used to being alone to hunt either. They are a breaking tool only & not something to make a dog go hunting lol. I can't believe how many people say that if they won't go they'll burn a ring around their neck (so to speak). This is just another example of how you've got to be smarter than the dog & set him up to do it on his or her own. It's also another example of why there are so many young dogs ruined by socalled trainers that some other sure enough smart trainers can take & make a coondog out of to their disbelief & throw off on that dog the socalled trainers have ruined because they consider that dog a failure when it is infact them that are the true failure.
