Dog lost his voice, any suggestions?

One day he's barking during feed time and before I finished feeding up his mout just silent. He tries to bark but nothing comes out and just as he is about done he hacks a little. I started giving him some amoxacilin (sp?) yesterday. Just wondering if anyone has delt with this and is there a remedy with out going to a vet!!

Thanks
Winston

Try!!

Honey or lemon juice. Put about a spoon full on his tounge and it might help. It is what singers use to keep their voice box strong.

Make sure he is getting enough water. Most of the time I pour about a cup water over their feed.

It seems like more dogs bark out compared to about 10 years ago. I had some that barked all the time and never lost anything loudness.

How many yard dogs have you seen barked out?

Go see a fox hound field trialer and get some prednizone. I believe the amoxicillin is a waste of time.

Amoxycillin is a waste of time unless you can identify a bacterial infection and know whether its a gram negative or a gram positive. I would go with joe (believe it or not) and use prednizone. Watch their attitude though, it can make some dogs cranky while they are on it. The drugs half life is a short one so if the dog gets too cranky for you, cease the medicine and he'll be back to normal within 36 hours at most.

if you use prednisone, you may have to watch his weight. dogs tend to eat more when on a steroid.

thanks

I found prednisone on pets med for like .09cnts per mg. Said recommended dose is from 2-6mg twice a day. Does that sound correct.

Thanks
Winston

I'd prolly give 2 mg three times a day first day then 2 times a day for 3 or 4 days and back it down to one time a day. keep em on it for at least a week.

That can also be effective depending again on the cause. I have found that particular item to be extremely useful in keeping a healthy dog breathing easier allot longer during strenuous activity.

I bought some of that 5 hour energy drink that is loaded down with B12. Gave half to my dog, and half to myself before hunting.....You are both ready to hunt all night then LOL!! The B12 seemed to help my old female a lot. I tried Robitussum and it didn't do Jack Squat for her. I have also used the LA200 method and it seemed to work well to. Haven't tried prednizone, but would give it a go if I couldn't find anything else. Good Luck and Hope all goes well with your dog.
