Tapeworms?

I read a post on here that someone suggested Zimecterin Gold from TSC. Is this the best thing to use other than going to a vet? How much of it would you use? Heres a link to what I'm talkin about from TSC.

Whick one of these two would you suggest?

praziquantel

The absolute best thing for tapeworms is the ingredient praziquantel. I'm not sure what the product you're talking has as a main ingredient but if you can find something with praziquantel, you can dose your dog at somewhere between 5-10 mg/kg and achieve excellent results. The problem with products like Quest Plus (which is moxydectin and Praziquantel) is that to get the desired amount of praziquantel, you end up giving a pretty hefty dose of Moxydectin ( which you probably don't need) along with the praziquantel. You probably are gonna have the same scenario with the Zimectrin Gold. I believe that product is made up of Ivermectin and praziquantel. I know most folks give their dogs a monthly dose of ivermectin (ivomec) anyway but the mixture is gonna end up giving you WAY more ivomec than you need to get the desired amount of praziquantel. I hope this helps and makes a little sense......Mike

oops

I didn't look at your second link about the praziquantel tablets. They may be a little more expensive but are a better choice in my opinion. The safeguard ( panacur) products are effective too but have to be given 3 consecutive days and only kill one type of tapeworm where the praziquantel kills them all....Mike

Thanks for yalls help. I guess I'll go to TSC and see what has Praziquantel as the main ingredient. It seems like a never ending battle with these things.

Get praziquantel... not just as the main ingredient, but as the only active ingredient. Zimectrin Gold and Equimax will dose the ivermectin way too high if you get the proper amount of prazi.
You will find several wormers that are praziquantel... D-worm, Tradewinds, etc.

The Zimecrtrin Gold does great for tapes. It was recommended to me by my vet and have used it for a couple of years with great results. I have heard people on here talk about the dosing being wrong and this and that but bottomline it works and doesnt hurt the dogs at all.

Here are the numbers on Zimectrin Gold when dosed for the proper amount of praziquantel.

One tube of ZG = 567 mg of praziquantel (see link below). The proper dosage for dogs is 3-3.5mg per pound (see second link below) that means a 50# dog would need 150 mg of praziquantel.
http://www.fda.gov/cvm/FOI/141-214s071304.pdf
http://www.fda.gov/cvm/FOI/664.htm
Most folks agree the heartworm preventative dosage of 1% ivermectin solution is 1/10 ml per 10 pounds of body weight. So for a 50# dog that would be .5 ml. Each ml contains 10mg of Ivermectin, therefore .5ml would = 5 mg of ivermectin. Each tube of ZG contains 113.8 mg of ivermectin (see first link posted). So if you give your dog the recommended dose of Praziquantel in the form of ZG you will be giving them over 30 mg of ivermectin which would be 6 times the recommended dose.
I would be concerned about the long term effects.

just out of curiosity. i saw the zimecterin for horses in a squeeze tube(Idon't know if this is the only way it comes or not), how much do you give a dog that weighs 50lbs? It said one "line" was enough to treat 250lbs of body weight.
