Need some opinions about pups...

Ok, before I get absolutely torn to pieces for putting this question out there let me just ask y'all to read ALL I have to say!

My blue female got out of her kennel while she was in heat during the time she was at someone else's house being trained. She was gone for about 24 hours, and I figured there was little to no chance that she wouldn't turn up pregnant. The people that were keeping her swore they thought she was too late in her cycle to catch, but here we are 2 months later and as of last night she has a litter of 8 solid black pups. From the looks of her she may have had more coming.

Here's my dilemma. This female is really something special to me. She's a beautiful dog-she actually won breed at the Grand American when she was about a month into her pregnancy, and I have no doubt that she could do more winning for me in the future. About 2 weeks before she whelped she went out and treed a coon for me by herself, so she is starting to turn on in the woods as well. In other words, I'm really excited about her potential as a nice dual purpose hound. I did want to breed this dog in the future, but I wanted to wait until I was pretty much done showing her to do so.

What do some of you recommend I do regarding keeping the litter? I'm very much an animal lover, and it absolutely breaks my heart to think about destroying the pups. For that reason I'm limiting my contact with them, because I do have a tendency to get easily attached. I've heard two different opinions about what would be the best route in terms of my dog keeping her figure. Some people have told me I should take the pups away as soon as possible so she won't keep producing milk. Others have told me to let them nurse full-term to help dry her up. Which would be the best option? It's a decision I need to make today.

Again, I feel like I'm sounding like a terrible person for possibly wanting to get rid of a litter of pups for the sake of my dog's looks. However, I'm also trying to think in terms of the pups' welfare as well. I don't have the need or the room for 8 cross-bred puppies, and I think I would have a hard time giving them away. Even my friends with deer dogs are picky about the kind of dogs they want in their pack, and most of them didn't even want them if they turned out to be blueticks. I'm sure all the animal-rights folks would jump all over me for this one, but the situation was truly an accident.

I'd keep the pups on the momma dog as long as possible. She'll wean them off when the time is right. If you pull the pups too early it's not good for them. I've seen females that were shown after having pups and not get penalized.

Now as far as keeping the pups....put an ad in the paper for free pups. You won't get any money for them anyway but you'll get them outta there.

To those that say to kill the pups....honestly? Thats wrong.

Wow....are you 5 or something?

Because I don't see the reason to kill a bunch of pups means I'm a vegan all of a sudden? You need to call down.

an accidental breeding that is going to happen sometimes. if the pups are a cross with another hound they prolly wouldnt be hard to find homes for them with pleasure hunters or a youngster looking for a dog. if they are a cross with something besides another hound then more the likely it will be real hard to find homes for them. you can take the pups to a vet and have a vet put them down if you feel you wont be able to find homes for them. if such a thing happens in the future and you think there is a possibility a dog could be bred take her to a vet and get her a shot just to be sure. there is nothing wrong with being responsible and takeing care of the matter.

what is wrong tho.....is when something like this happens and the owner of the dog lets the gip raise the pups. then after they cant find any homes for the pups they take them out in the country and dump them. then the dogs becomes someone elses problem or end up killing livestock and someone else has to shoot the dogs.

goodluck to you on which ever decision you make with them.

I knew this was probably going to be a highly controversial topic, but I do agree with you TX. I don't believe in keeping a litter of pups only to turn around and put them out on the side of the road or something. That's something I'd absolutely NEVER do. Yes, I wish I'd taken care of the matter from the start. However, I didn't bring the dog home until almost a month after she got loose and was bred, and like I said the person keeping her didn't believe it was possible that she was pregnant. I trust his opinion, and he's plenty competent so it was an honest oversight. I wasn't sure if having the litter aborted was possible so long into the term, so I didn't pursue that option. Maybe a better way of putting the question at hand would have been something along the line of how I could help her regain somewhat of her pre-pregnancy appearance. Like I said, I've heard differing opinions about whether it was best to let the pups nurse or take them away. If it's best to keep them until they are weaned, then so be it. If not, I would rather see them go early than possibly go to a home that won't take care of them or go to the shelter, because I absolutely can't keep any of the pups myself. I'm trying hard to think logically here and not let my emotions be involved.

Have you talked to a vet?

Maybe your vet can give you some ideas on how to get your dog's girly figure back after the pups.

Hey lady that is a tough one -

Not sure how I would handle but with you knowing who the mother is and that she will go and tree you may still be able to give them to a youth that is looking for a pup. If they are trained with another hound the hound may come out in them.

Post on some of the boards that you have free pups to a youth handler and explain the situation.

If all else fails as bad as it sounds you can take them to the local shelter.... Puppies do have a much higher chance of getting adopted out that older dogs.

Good luck to you and hope you are doing well!!

the way I see it, the pups are already here and as far as affecting how the mama dog looks, that has already happened... She is already producing milk, so her looking like she has never been bred is not going to happen... She want ever be quite as tight as she once was, but if she looked as good as you said she did before the pups, then you will have no problem at all finishing her out after the pups. You may not ever win the world show with her but getting a title on her shouldn't be hard at all for you.
I understand that you didn't want to breed her before you finished her out in the shows, (because that is how I am with all my gyps.) but the fact is that it has happened and you can't undo that. Killing those puppies is not going to make her automatically stop producing milk and it sure isn't going to take away the fact that she had them.
I suggest you let her keep her pups. but do not let them stay on her to long. it is ok to start weaning them at about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks, and have them completely weaned by 4 weeks. this will not affect the pups much at all as long as you supplement them with replacement milk until they are 6 weeks old. (not bottle feeding, but just mix the powder replacement milk into their food so they still get all the nutrients they need.) taking them away from mom at 4 weeks will help out a lot with her keeping her "shape" because this way poor mama dog want have 8 big pups holdin on to her tryin to eat all the time. You should start offering the pups "Liquid puppy food" as soon as their eyes open. the best way i have found to make liquid puppy food is to mix 1 part puppy food to 2 parts mixed replacement milk and let it soak for about 2 hours. then get a blender and mix it together until it is completely soupy. (this is very messy, but it helps the pups get use to solid food.) after they start eatin that ok, go ahead and start making it where it is firmer every day until the pups can eat regular soaked food with out having to blend it. (they should be doing that within a week and a half after starting the weaning process.) continue to feed them puppy food soaked in replacement milk until they reach 6 weeks of age and then puppy food soaked in plain water will work just fine, and by 7 weeks they should be able to get down hard puppy food.(but it want hurt to continue soaking it…)
Since you want be selling these puppies don't waste your money on expensive wormer. if you use liquid ivermec for your big dogs you can use that on them. (I can help you with dosage amounts if you would like.) also their is no need in you wasting a lot of money on shots. once again your not raising these pups to sell your just raising them to keep them alive long enough to give them to someone else. so don't worry about taking them to the vet for shots. Go to your local feed store and they should sale 7 in 1 shots which will work just fine for these pups, and it will only cost you about $5 a shot. or you can buy from Upco.com I have used them several times before and never have had a puppy get sick. the shots cost under $2 a piece if you order from them. (I can give you more information on that if you would like.)
to get rid of the pups after they turn 6 weeks old, I suggest you run an ad in the paper like Plottluver said, put flyers up around town, and if you can, ask your local feed store if you can bring them down there one Saturday mornin and give them away. people are a lot more likely to take them if they can see them.
one of my favorite dogs is my sisters Lab/Bluetick mix that I raised for her. He is solid black like your pups and he is an amazingly smart dog. (he is also turning out to be an excellent squirrel dog for my brother in law.) Just because these puppies may not be convenient doesn't mean you should kill them. they will turn out to be someones favorite pet. And if you do things right it want be to much trouble or money to raise them... and don't worry about finishin mama out, she will make it. this want have any affect on her huntin ability and it will have Very Very LITTLE affect on her showing. Plus You CAN NOT UNDO WHAT HAS ALREADY HAPPENED! So just do what you can to not make things any worse and Make the BEST out of a BAD situation!
If you need any help, feel free to ask, and I will do the best I can to help you!

Best of Luck with Them! God Bless and Happy Hunting,

Shelly Embrey

I guess that just shows the difference in morals.

It's not those pups fault for being born so why should they be killed? I seriously doubt the original poster is that clueless as to take a litter of pups out and dump them on the side of the road. She sounds a bit more educated then that.

Aside from that you just don't get the point of what I said.

These are pups..not people.

There is plenty of pups sitting in pounds and on the classifieds looking for a home.
