Miffed!!!!

Tonight my partner and I planned on attending a hunt in Pauls Valley OK. We got to Pauls Valley about 30 minutes before deadline. When we got to Pauls Valley I opened up the Bloodlines to find the directions to be plainly " County Fairgrounds north of town". We live approximately 2 1/2 hrs from there. So of course we rode around town looking for a UKC Hunt sign posted. After riding around for about 15 minutes looking for a sign that we didn't find I decided to call the phone # in the book. We called the # several times but nobody answered!!!! Well about 25 minutes after deadline we finally found the clubhouse. We talked to someone who was apparently a club member and were told that signs weren't posted because they thought everybody knew where it was!!!!! Now I'm usually not one to stir the pot but I'm sitting @ the house right now @ 11:18pm after driving 5 hrs round trip and spending my hard earned money on gas just so I could eat @ a local Mexican Restaurant in Pauls Valley Oklahoma. Is there some type of a rule that says that the phone # they put in the book should not be someone's home phone, but maybe for someone that has a dadgum cell phone. I'm sitting here $75 shorter in my bank account because of this very reason!!!!!!!!!!!!

I FEEL YOUR PAIN !! So far we have not missed a dead line, but come dang close because of not being posted properly and no one answering the phone of the number given...It is very aggravating when you are so far away from home...We have arrived at many so aggravated that we didn't even enjoy our stay...Now that's pretty bad, when you travel for so many miles and hours for the assumpion that everybody knows where they are at...We have relied on locals A BUNCH OF TIMES !! When you ask enough folks, eventually somebody can point ya in the right direction...BUT, the thing is, you shouldn't have to go through all that...

LOL...We have even left messages to some that we still have not gotten a return call from to tell us how to get there...LOL...

But, to be fair...There have been some out of town clubs that have bent over backwards to get us there, and even sent out a search crew looking for us !!

That sucks!! Some of these clubs can be very difficult to find. There's so much wrong with the current system I dont even want to get into it.

Addresses should be posted with a phone number. Problem with cells is the location of club. I know the local club here sits in a bad spot for most cell service.

Why didn't you just stop at a gas station and ask them where the fairgrounds were?

Over the years I've learned to cringe when the final direction is signs will be posted. Fairgrounds can be the worst because everyone thinks they're big and easy to find. I guess they are if the wife's driving. LOL

I agree. With so many people using the internet, and others with GPSes, it would be so easy to find clubs with an address posted.

I went to that location once

I couldn't find that location (after more than 5 hours to get there). I had to stop at a local business and ask directions because the location is tricky to find.
Our club lists the President's cell phone number because there's usually someone who needs help finding our events. And I ALWAYS appreciate phone numbers for events where someone will answer the phone & "talk me to the event" when I've driven HOURS to get there and get totally lost.

We did stop before the deadline and ask for directions. We were told to go down here to the "T" and take a right. Apparently the fella forgot to tell us the rest of the directions because after deadline was up 30 minutes later we found the club.

I know of one club in VA. that the directions are to turn onto road # so & so, follow the signs. The road goes to a stop sign, turns left and then right through several intersections. At one stop sign you have to turn right (not follow the road #) to get to the club. There are NO signs, I asked a person about the signs and he said that he had been coming to the club for over 15 years and had NEVER seen a sign!

Our club now has the mailing address for people to use GPS's.

i know everyone doesn't have one but last spring i got a Garmin NUVI GPS as a gift.i did not think i would hardly use it when i got it but it is one of the greatest tools for going to the hunts i ever got. it would be great if every club would post there address and or GPS courdinates. when i get to a club house i always punch it in as a favorite and save it. then i can always find it again. it works great for after the hunt also. no matter where they guide me to if i don't need to go back to the club house i can just hit the home button and it shows me the way. it also has some nice features like shows you where gas, food, lodging and it even gives you phone numbers so you can call if you need to.

Well to be upfront this the second time this has happened to me and it will be the last. I've been making UKC hunts within four hours of me for about twenty years. When I first started going to them every hunt was a big deal. It was a place to go show off your dogs and if you got in the top 4 or 5 you'd get a trophy or a plaque or something that showed a little gratitude for me coming down to your club and contributing. These days it's hard to even get a "thank you". I know those trophies weren't worth nothing but it's kinda nice to show your kids and someday grandkids. All you get now is a winslip. I'm gonna stick with the registry that at least gives a little back. They sure don't give it all back but at least I can recoup some of my hardearned money. Thanks for all the replies. HAPPY HUNTING AND GOD BLESS!!!!!

i hate it when the directions are wrong. i have had this happen several times. stop and ask and no one seems to know the club exists. had that happen also. i once called a contact number given in the bloodlines only to find out this person had nothing to do with the club and had no idea what i was talking about. must have been a misprint i guess.
imo the clubs that really want you to come and then come again will give clear directions, have signs posted, and a contact number that actually is a contact number. the other clubs will just disappear as more and more people get tired of playing guessing games. in this economy its hard enough to finance a hobby without wasting money driving around for nothing.
i'll always try to go to any club if it isn't an outrageous distence. if the people there aren't friendly; and by that i mean at least try to speak with me, then i mark it down as a no returner. so far i have had only 2 experiences like that. most of the places i have gone have been pretty nice.

You all have to understand that UKC will and does follow up on written complaints regarding the sloppy handling of event particulars on behalf of hosting clubs. Not posting signs when it says so specifically in an ad is one of those situations. So is taking late entries, gambling, etc. We expect the same level of professionalism that you all do from our clubs.

If we have to write them a letter and hold their feet to the fire to make sure they are doing things correctly then so be it. We can't do that if you simply get mad and say, "I'm not going there again." Do something about it. If you decide not to go back that's one thing but if you do something about it maybe a fellow hunter won't find themselves in the same boat.

If you go to enough events sooner or later you will miss a deadline, I know I have over the years. Usually it's a traffic issue along with not being able to allow lots of time, I know lots of time isn't always an option.

I have had people ask about our club's address so they could use mapquest or a garmin. Guess what I have 3 different addresses and none of them come up in the right place.lol I kid ya not.

I guess midMichigan just hasn't caught up with the 21st century.

I know what the rulebook says about signs being posted and all that. The only question I got is does UKC read the directions that the club puts in their book and call the number and see if it's a good # and all that. And as far as filing a complaint, I haven't the faintest idea who to call for that. AND ON TOP OF ALL THAT IS IT GONNA GIVE ME THAT $100 THAT WAS OUT OF MY POCKET FOR THAT TRIP. Also, the 1st 19 of that twenty I had never missed a deadline. Now in the past year I have missed it twice for the same reason!!!!

I've gone to events and some clubs can be difficult to find.
Last year I went to a club in WI. I headed out way early so I had plenty of time to find it. I followed the directions from the book, the first problem I encountered was that the city listed was not the city where the event was held. I was too early so the club didn't have signs out yet. I made the correct turn off but the road name changes (must be crossing from 1 county to another or something) I kept driving straight. Ended up coming into another town. I drove by a couple of residences with dogs or dogboxes but being WI I didn't pay any attention to it. Fortunately I found the club with no problems but I will say the directions weren't good. It should include the city where the event is held not a city 10 miles away. The directions could have been more precise. It should have listed the the clubhouse was so & so's residence so I would have been looking for a residence not a townhall or clubhouse. Had I been pushing the deadline I would have been upset. It all worked out.
I've been to others that might have 1 sign at the turnoff of the major road or a sign at the end of the clubhouse drive, but not signs from the major hwy to every turnoff to the club. Again, I always head out way too early so it is seldom an issue for me.
Bottom line is if the club would put good precise directions in the book, signs would not be necessary. If the directions are right and you can't find the club you shouldn't be walking around the woods at night.
I think it is a good idea to have someone unfamiliar with the area give the directions a trial run. A club member cannot tell you if the directions are good or not because they already know every possible route and sideroad to the club.
Always give yourself plenty of extra time for travel. If you miss the deadline it is probably your own fault for not allowing enough time. Sometimes it isn't, like in Chuckydw's situation. If I can't find the club after driving around town for 30 minutes that's a club not worth attending.

I know of a beagle club that a lot of people have a hard time finding because to get to it you have to go down Pansy Rd. The road was named that by a former sheriff because there is a Harley gang headquarters on the road and he thought he would make fun of them by making their place on a road named Pansy. Problem is the Harley riders keep tearing down the signs and as a result a lot of rabbit hunters get lost trying to find the club cause they can't find Pansy Rd. It's kinda funny though!
