Working the hounds

Yea, ol' Ike has been hunting and working those dogs a little bit..

I took six hounds out a week ago and started an old lion track in the ice and dry south slopes off a tom lion scratch around early to mid-morning. They all left out ahead of me and were gone by the time I found what they were on. Dogs out after dark and no treeing switch action or no dogs back down off the mountain. I was back up before daylight and dogs were moving but still no tree switch action, thought they were headed out. Around 9:00 AM the treeing switches started going off on all of those dogs and I thought "oh man".

It was around 10:30 AM when I started into the dogs, radio beep only and no sounds. I reached the tree around 2:30 or 3:00 PM and back out to the road at 6:30 PM or just after dark.......

I just had four days off and laid home the first two waiting for a gal to call me to go hunt a lion, no call so I loaded up Sunday and put thirty miles on the snow sled. A female size track was found and I thought I'd put a couple of the older dogs out and two of the younger ones; the older ones were Choco and Griz, and the two younger ones were Rui Li and my coming three year old plott dog Maverick..

Well, they smoked that lion and ol' Ike had to climb into another lion tree. And luckily, I made it out around 5:30 PM and was loaded up and driving home before dark--life is great!

That black plott Maverick has been doing pretty darn well this winter. He was locked up tight like an old dog after two days down the track and was hammer his guts out yesterday after four hours on the wood........he'd gonna be a keeper!

It's nice to see a lion in a tree. I havn't cut a track in over two weeks. Iv'e been out almost everyday, riding roads and walking canyons. It's been so dry some of the game has started moving back up. one of these days I'll find where those lions are. Untill then atleast I can get on here and see one in the tree.

thanks bigskyblue........

the red and blueticked dogs are crossbred hounds out of my old blue Ryan dog crossed a red female that came out of my redbone Ike dog and my red female LionHeart.

And tycon, we all know how those dry spells feel so keep after those lions.........

Last dog

Ben,

There were six dogs under the tree, as I usually hunt all six and leave the two older dogs home lots of times these days. Both my redbones were there, Ike (9) and Choco (7), Kody and Griz (both 4), Maverick, the black plott dog (3 this spring). and Rui Li (pronounced Ray Lee) (is 2), the little ticked walker colored female out of Ryan.

Rui Li was out crossed to a redtick colored female named Echo that is owned and hunted by a young man here locally. We crossed my Ike dog to his female three years ago and then to my blue Ryan dog the following year. The young man kept a male pup out of both litters and claims they are doing great. Rui Li is about as fast a young hound as I've ever seen, and just loves to run. She started running with the big dogs at six months of age on bear and has made every tree but one.........
