info needed

I have an older dog. Will tree his own coon. He will let other dogs(pups) hunt wih him but will not hunt with older dogs. If you put him with other dogs that can and will tree on their own he will not back them. He goes off by himself and gets treed and 90% of the will have the meat. When he trees and other dogs come to back him he will leave and go find another coon. Can I do anything for this and sould I? The reason for the question is. He is a show champion dog but I have never had him in any competition hunts. I would like to finish him to nite ch. for the paperwork.

Was he ate up at the tree by another dog at some point in his life?? I would kennel him with another one of your dogs get them used to each others company. Turn them loose together see what happens.

Well here is my best guess. It prolly had nothing to do with the ever popular "rough dog" . It was much more likely the result of his former "trainer" beating his ass everytime he covered another dog because he wanted the dog to be independant. So that is what he got, a dog that leaves whenever another dog covers him. The reason he is ok with pups is because they aren't treeing any coons on him. That is my guess.

It might be possibe to fix this and make him useable for competion but it isn't very likely.

In my opinion

It takes a idiot to try to beat a dog to make them independent. If it's not a bred in trait then switch dogs or bloodlines as there are a plenty of very independent dogs & bloodlines to choose pups from. There are far more dogs ruined than made by doing this. Besides if it's not a bred in trait what have you got in the first place??? A hitch hiking ,me tooing idiot but you know what they say about opinions. lol

Thanks for the input guys but I assure you this dog has never been beaten or mistreated in any way. He has been a straight coon only dog from day 1. He has never even been juiced for any reason. To my knoledge he was never attacked on the tree either unless it was before we could get there. He has just always been this way. Here is some of the bloodline. his grandsires are Ragin Black Hoss II and Gilley"s Midnight Special. His granddams are Doherty's Northern Nights Zip and Ozark Screaming Lil. Sire is Ragin Blackrooster. Dame is Hard luck Special Sis. Any suggestions on how to fix the above mentioned will be welcomed or would you just try to hunt in comp. anyway?
