Free stud fees?

I have been noticing more "free" stud fees lately, I was wondering what the primary motivations are? Here's my ideas on the subject....

1. In this economy, pups are harder to sell and the breeder needs every bit of extra help to keep the puppy price reasonable?

2. With performance payouts to the sire owner, it makes more sence to use the free stud fee as an advantage to get more pups on the ground which will hopefully result in future payouts which make up for the missed stud fees?

3. Most of the free stud fees are unproven sires and this is the only chance they have of getting the females in?

Anyone have any other thoughts? I think it is likely a mixture of #1 and #2 for most studs, with an emphasis on #2. For some newer studs it might be a mixture of all 3...

I offer a free stud fee on my dog because he is a coon dog and I'm not out to make a killing on him. Bring your female with a neg. brucellosis test and you can breed to him. He is not all grand but anyone can hunt with him most any night. I could care less about the money. I like to see good dogs bred to good dogs. I have a male pup out of him now I am starting. I'm not a big pedigree guy. If I hunt with a dog and like it I like for what it does not what it has on its papers. The sport of coonhunting is about the hound anyway not trying to make a wad of money. I would coonhunt regardless of the money. I love to see a good hound work.

Lets be honest here: Unless you are a big time breeder with a houseshold name or have a special stud dog how much are you really gonna make off studding a dog. Okay lets start with advertising: To run a color ad for any amount of time it costs hundreds and even thousands of dollars. Then you have to pay him up in all of these programs. UKC Performance PKC super stakes and breeders stakes AKC has there thing now. You must pay your stud dog up in all these things if you want your pups worth anything. I really dont think the free stud service for the most part has anything to do anything besides tough economic times. Besides the only stud dogs that get the big 500 dollar stud fees are your elite producers. I myself see no problem with a free stud service. Besides if the stud dog gets hot you really think the stud owner is going to leave it free?

I think it's more of #2 with a little #3 thrown in. If you get enough pups on the ground, then you have a better chance of getting a few that will make you some decent money back in the Performance Program.
