i bought a 6 week old black and tan pup about a week ago and was wondering when the best age was to start one

I usually start taking them hunting around 5 1/2 months. I like to hunt them about an hour or the older dogs tree a coon. Depends on which one happens first. Then when they get a lil older(7-8 months) its ok to hunt them harder. When you first start hunting them they more than likely won't go far from you not to worry. The main thing you want them to do now is get use to the night woods and sounds.

I'm sure you will get several different ideals on when and how to start a young pup. The fun part is deciding on which ones you want to use.

let em be pups, get to know you, i took mine out for walks in the woods (day and night) and played with them until they were 9-10 months old then I showed them a caged coon. Let them play with it in a roll cage...drug it up a tree...etc. They took right to it and now they are turning into good dogs. Don't start too early though or you'll make it not fun and burn them out for awhile. Then it'ss take some time to get them back to it.

I Like to try to start them when they are 5-6 months old. If they are not ready then I wait untill they are. They will let you know when that time is.

If you can, let them run loose. It will help. They will tree cats or squirrels when they are 3-4 months old and this doesn't hurt. Teach them to handle while they are young. Don't hang up tails for them to tree. If they have tree in them they will tree wild animals.

I do not use cage coons or drags. I prefer to hunt a puppy by itself, taking it where there are coons. They will take interest in coon scent and eventually run up on one hot enough to tree it themselves. This is worth 20 with an old dog. Hunt it with other dogs enough to be use to it, but hunt the dog alone too. They learn bad things from over-use of drags and cage coon training. Pick up bad habits from older dogs too.

If they learn to do it by themselves they do not need help from an older dog. I believe in on-the-job training! (In the woods hunting wild coon alone)! You have to have a good prospect to begin with to do this.

Just my considered opinion based on what I have learned over time.

let the pup decide what is the right age.. i have had some that would start as young as 4-5 mths.. the BEST i ever owned did not even act interested till he was 16 mths old.. MOST would have culled him by then and normally i would not keep one that long but when his switch came on he did not need any help..

like above, the more time you can spend with them in the woods the better.. just let them be a pup and play but scold them when they do or start to do something bad.. talk to them alot and pet alot..

i like to take mine to the woods at about three months old and let them get comfortable with being out there and new smells..even if they stay around you at that age just dont pay any attention to them..they usally will start going with the old dogs a little at a time depends on the pup..this works for me but everybody is different but i have 4 pups that started early this way 3 black and tans and 1 english all started runing and treeing between with old dog at 4 or 5 months old started running and treeing by there self at 5 to 6 months old...jmo

If you live back off fo the road where you can let the pup run loose it does them so much good. Chris & I let all of our pups run loose until they start venturing to far ( you'll know when this is ) & then we pen or tie them up. we show 1 cage coon in daytime & one at night & let them tree it . then we turn coon loose without them seeing it & let them tree it & give it to them. then we start hunting them about 6or7 months old & about all out of Nut start running & treeing with old dogs & a lot of them start splittreeing at 7or8 months old. then it's time to hunt them alone & they usually have no problems going alone, some it takes a few trips but they've always treed coon by themselves after a few trips. some the first time alonebut put them where you know they'll get after a coon & it's worth so much for them alone. this works for us but a lot depends on the pup. guess were just lucky Nut puts the hunt in them . all we've ever started will flat out hunt alone as he does & this is a major plus when it comes to pups. good luck with your pup.

Mr. Young,

You are very lucky. If I did that the puppy would be dead in probably the first 12 hours, and some one in the neighbor would probably turm me in for a dog off a leash.

Derek,

I usually take pups for wood walks right from about 7-8 weeks. Then after that I let the pup tell me by their actions if they are ready for the hunt. If they start ranging out and I don't see them for 30 or more minutes, or if they start running tracks that is usually good indicator they are ready to progress to the enxt step.

I dont like to fool with a Hound, thats under a Year Old, a Year and a Half to two years is better.
I think alot of the messed up hounds these days are from people screwing them up as pups.

two each there own about messing a pup up it works for me to start young..i have a 7 month old black & tan pup that is ready for comp. hunts and he will be a nite champ by a year old..i think the younger the better if you wait to long they get lazy and wont be worth anything..jmo

Larry, your right we are lucky to be able to do this. I couldn't imagine being in you guys shoes that live in places like that & hate it for you. Derek you've also got to know when to lay a pup up. If after getting it going & it's been doing good & then you notice it slacking then leave it home awhile & let it really want it when you do take it & do your best to get it on a coon thats easy to tree as possible. Luckily our Nut pups haven't done this , but i've had pups in the past I had to kind of rekindle the fire so to say. Hope this helps.

dont like to start until 9 months to a year,, i like their brain to develop a little more and gain some more physical and mental maturity,,,i think starting them to young can cause some bad habits and cause some to burn out down the road . i think the longer you wait the more willing they are to learn instead of play , JMO

Plottchaser , Wrong ! These pups ran this track nearly 300 yards threw the woods , with there nose to the ground, time and time again they tree it. AS LONG AS YOU DONT GET TRICKEY THEY WILL TREE IT............
