I did some more testing on what kind of range I could get with my Garmin.With just the unit itself I got up to 4 miles in some spots.Then I hooked the magnetic roof antenna to it and the signal started going in and out at 7 miles.The furthest signal I got was at 8.15 miles.

Mine would not get that with a radio tower hooked to it LOL......At my house in the hills it gets 3.3 with the magnetic ant.

I have to agree with not much distance with the hand held unit. I could see the dogs out on an open flat going and was losing the signal on them all the time. Just got my roof antenna and am going to try it. I have a feeling some have a hard time judging distance. Check it out with Google earth and it will surprise you what you think it is and what it actually is for distance.

wow any body wanna trade i have been useing one with the dc30 and i only get a little over a mile in the forest and with the extra long antena we are geting about 2.5 miles

unless i am doing something wrong mine dont reach that far

If your waiting for something better you might get a hold of NASA and ask them to track your dog for you!!! I don't think it will get any better than GPS !!!! I get an average 1-2 miles with a stock hand unit. But I am planning on getting the truck mount antenna ... I will never go back to a Beep- Beep tracker... The GPS are very nice, and would recommend anyone buying one !!!

If your not getting good range you may want to rduce your ID number, the lower the ID the better the range sometimes. Mine is set on 9 and 1 and both get around 1.5-2 miles with the handheld unit only.

I'm getting an average of 1.5-2 miles in actual hunting conditions which is plenty enough.I got UP to 4 miles hanging a collar and driving down the road.One day I turned on a collar and left it inside the house and didn't lose a sighnal until I got close to 3 miles down the road.

i know one thing,mine picks up far enough with the dc30 that i dont think i ever gotta worry about leavin a dog out all night ever again!!! only thing i dont like is if the dog stops moving it will say the dog is treed when it might not really be!

What kind of dogs are you guys running? A coondog has no reason to go 3-8 mile to tree a coon. You guys must got some deer runners. I hunt in the hills around Nashville,TN and mines work well have never lost reception and my dog has never ran no 2-8 miles to tree a coon.

I know these things are improved, but has anyone used them in heavy vegitation? I am really thinking about getting one, but don't want it useless when hunting those heavy SW Mich. swamps in the summer.

I got about 2 to 2.5 miles this winter with the handheld unit. Dont know what it will do yet in the summer once the leaves get on and the brush greens up but if its anything close to that it will work just fine for me and my dogs. If I had dogs that went further than 2 to 2.5 miles then I would move to where there are more coon or I would find me some different dogs to hunt. JMO

i get aliitle over a mile with mine 20 and .67 with the 30 flat ground, hills, in town, open, thick cover about the same

wow BOOBOO at a little over a mile and of course at .67 i dont need a tracker to find a dog illl just use my left and right ear GEEEEEZ i cant understand how these guys are just running these units alone on hounds when the range is so poor ..............who needs a tracker that is losing signal as soon as a loud hound is getting out of hearing? when i lose a hound which is actually very rare but does happen i want all the range i can get PERIOD.........lets face it the right kind sometimes blow the hell outta pocket and end up where they have no reason to ever be ..........another concern i have is the 15 hour life of the battery in the winter time i hunt dark to daylight some and that would be pushing it if something bad happened right at daylight .......love the concept but WILL be waiting for them to get the units perfected to where i dont need a conventional tracking system before i purchase one.... the bells and whistles are nice but bringing my dog home safely is the bottom line!!

A mile is along way for a dog to hunt a area. most people's dog that have those big hunting loud mouth dogs find out with these systems they can barley here them even if they can @ a half mile and there mile turns in to half

Trust me i have had the system since they come out going on 2 years this Aug. Most dogs are closer than they sound and when you can barley here them there not as far as youy think. THATS WHAT I FOUND OUT

How many of you guys have sold your beep, beep, units and rely on the garmin? I am thinking about buying one, but in order to do it I will have to sell some things. My beep, beep, unit will be one of them.

I hunt mostly big water, and I think the Garmin would be a nice tool to have. How do the collars hold up in the water?

The yagi option is very interesting as well.

I have a run the garmin alone since day one i love it i don't get the range some people get but would not trade it for 25 beep beeps.

Pull it look @ him go get him instead of beep beep beep in circles for a 5 mins and not nowing what you are walking threw or across to get him . just look @ the map see he's across the river go around or next to a road after you have walked way threw there when you could have drove. but thats just me

I have walked a many mile before to find out they were on the other side of the river. You then have two options. Strip down and swim, or walk back out to the truck to drive around. Both options stink. One is quick and wet, and the other waist a lot of time.
