im a black n tan man and YES alot of the bloodlines are weak in the tree department. alot of the bloodlines have to have the tree worked into them. the bloodline im hunting right now has alot of natural tree power. if i was to add anything to most the black n tan blood it would be TREE but other then that i love the breed.

I'm a walker man and I know several men I grew up hunting with that are black and tan men. They always have some really good dogs. I have tried to buy several of them. I don't think it has as much to do with they like to trail. I think burdette is right on the bloodline part. Walkers used to be known for fast trailing and handling tracks as they came. Now they are known as slick treeing idiots. My dad started a line twenty years ago and I still hunt that line. They are not big name dogs but a large percentage are true coondogs. They handle tracks great and when they tree they have a coon. I don't care how hard they tree as long as they have the meat. Same with any hound. If you want more tree then talk to black and tan men and you can find a line that has the tree power.

I am a black & tan man to the core and in my humble opinion having stay put tree dogs in one thing that the black & tan breed hasn't had any trouble with...but just like in all breeds, some strains seem to be better, more natural treedogs from the get-go than others do...

I draw B&T's at alot of hunts around here and they seem to have plenty of tree although they don't always have a coon.

Just a thought, but maybe you should be askin the black and tan hunters since they would know more about their breed than people that don't hunt them and wouldn't really know what is "common" in the breed?

Yes, B&T's have been historically weak on tree, imo. In more recent years there has been an improvement, but we are still struggling with weak treeing genetics in some lines. The problem is some of those weak treeing dogs learn to tree and go on to make good, maybe outstanding, coondogs. But, when they are bred, you can guess what they throw on down the line.

I can give you several names of walker hunters that have hunted with them and will know how my B&T's tree. I've had to find that balance between the weak, "not natural" tree'ers and those that slick tree alot. But if a young dog leaves my place it will tree good and any pup that leaves here will have 2 good, natural treeing parents and a written guarantee. I have the bone pile for the rest.

ive drawn quite a few black dogs at hunts and they have always had pleanty of tree, several are pretty nice dogs,, but two faults ive seen in some is that they are lazy, and dont always have a coon,, just noticed by a couple ive seen,, dont know for sure,,and they may bot all be like this, but they came out of the Hicks albert breeding and seemed like lazy hunters to me

Branch out. Try hunting with some other people other than those you have been. My dogs fault is treeing to much. I would rather ave one that trees to much as not enough.

Here are some blood lines of black dogs that have plenty of tree. Jar,Ozark Screaming Bo, Set em up Ace, Dark Hollow Hobo's Hoss. All of these dogs are bred to climb on the wood.
