young pup in a nitehunt

i gotta 9 month old pup I've been hunting alone for 2 months. he has a nice locate hes an accurate stay put tree dog that likes to be alone. in this bad weather its hit and miss but he can usually get under 2 coons in 2 hours. he has only been hunted with one dog his entire life. I've got a couple bench shows close to the house I'm gonna hit this weekend. their are nite hunts after the shows SHOULD I ENTER THIS PUP?

I wouldn't hunt one that young in the hunts. They can learn toooooo many BAD habits from the other dogs. I'd let him grow up a lil more.

Mike, some things can happen in a hunt that nobody wants to happen.

If you feel your dog can handle serious tree pressure, even fang pressure, or stay out of a two hour three dog coyote race, then enter him.

I would assume not many hunters would expose a pup of such high caliber to the rigors of a nite hunt at such a young age.

Pleasure hunt him til he's 2. You'll be happy you did.

You can ruin one a heck of a lot faster than you can make one!

Mike,

I think that you are the one that needs to decide whether or not he is ready for the hunts. By now you have hunted in enough hunts around here to know what he will be drawn out with & whether he's ready or not.

When I lived out in Oklahoma, I had a young dog that had a 3rd & a 9th place on him by the time he turned 9 months old. Then there are some that are not ready for the hunts at 2 years old.

I didn't vote, because I have not hunted with him to make a decision one way or the other, that is why you are the one that needs to make that decision.

Putting that Pup in a Nite Hunt, would be like sending an 6th grader to Vietnam.

Put em in. Thet are easier to correct when they are young. You might as well test him out sooner than later.

PEOPLE ALWAYS BRING UP ROUGH DOGS IN HUNTS. IVE PLEASURE HUNTED WITH ROUGHER DOGS THEN IVE SEEN IN HUNTS. HECK IVE OWNED 2 DOGS UNDER 10 MTHS THAT COULD CLEAN ALL THE OLDER DOGS OFF THE TREE. ITS A CHANCE YOU HAVE TO TAKE.

I wouldnt hunt him yet. I always wait till they are about 2 or a little older. I have seen a lot of rabbit races, caoyote races and rough dogs. If I had a young dog of high caliber I wouldnt want to push him till i knew he was ready.

thanks everybody for the responses. im just getting anxious i gotta weigh the pros and cons. seeing these dogs making grand at a year old has got me wanting to push more than i should i think. can he win? yes i believe so. is he ready? i don't know. hes pretty solid but i don't wanna screw him up. its a big decision for me but if i got 2nd thoughts i guess i shouldn't do it.

Thats awful young to withstand the pressure of a good hot deer race or get ate up at a tree..but with that being said I would enter him if he's a stay put tree dog that stand some pressure. The calibur of dogs drawn vary widely. Here they are pretty solid most times. It's the HANDLERS you gotta watch out for.Do you think YOU are ready?I, personally have gotten chewed up and spit out a few times...lol

If he hunts alone and trees coon regularly then I would probably try him out. If you put him out there and you don't like the way it feels there is no rule that says you can't withdraw your dog. I personally have never hunted a 9 month old in the hunts but only because I have never had one that young that I thought was ready.

I would sign him up and give him a shot. If after the first drop you think it's time to leave then you are only loosing entry fee.
