Holes

I said this before and I will say it again... You want a dog too track and have the coon !!! How does the dog make a coon go up a tree? If my dog has the power to talk the coon into going up a tree in stead of a hole. I want the the coon talked into coming to the road so I can set in the pickup and watch the fight !!! I hear people talking about whooping and shocking dogs off a hole.. That dog just caught the coon, what you wanted him to do.. RIGHT ? Be glad the coon is caught. My dogs are trained to track and have the coon and to stay with the coon tell I get there, and I don't give sh^t if it's in a cave.. Stupidous thing I've ever heard.. Make up your mind do you want the dog to have the coon or not ?? {just on your conditions right}

I haven't put one in a hole in the ground for years now.....

One of the last tracks we did put in a hole ended up not being a coon. I was hunting a couple of young dogs and one old dog. They struck a track burnt it up and stayed treed in the hole. When we got to them my buddy said I bet we can run him out of that hole. He finds a long skinny sapling and cuts it off. We notice another hole on the backside of where they are. He starts poking around in the hole yelling WATCH that other hole I feel it..... WATCH THAT OTHER HOLE I HEAR IT GROWLING!!!! WATCH THE HOLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEN HE YELLS SKUNK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!! I think he broke himself from poking around in a hole. LOL

Dogs are smarter than most give them credit for.

A hole in the ground and a tree are NOT the same thing.

I break my dogs from treein in the ground. If you lived where I was raised up huntin you would too. The whole dang mountain is hollow. I have shot coons out and have them bounce one time and get in a hole before the dogs could get ahold of them, right under the same tree the treed in. You can't walk 100 yards without going by a rock hole big enough for coon to be gone. Those holes aren't shallow either, they run for miles under the ground and they are ROCK, you can't dig them out with a backhoe let alone a shovel. You ain't gettin that coon out and if you got a dog that fools with a hole you are likely to have a dead dog from gettin back in there and gettin hung etc. Happens all the time where I grew up, that's why we break them from the ground. They can't tree coon if they are dead in a hole somewhere.

It's not hard to do, you don't have to get radical with them. You just gotta be firm, tell them hole and switch them a little. It won't be long and they will locate the hole and go on.

If you don't have coon that live in the ground (around where I am now it's not a problem, but where I grew up it was awful) then it's not a big deal. But where I grew up if you didn't break the dogs from the ground you would go to more ground holes than trees. The coon there live in the ground (easy to see when you go caving). A couple of times a year is no big deal, if you live where they can get in the ground a couple of times a night you would change your tune.

And the dogs dang well know the difference in digging in the ground and treein up. Never had it effect how my dogs tree to have them broke from the ground.

Poor dog looks the wrong way cut switch !!!! Then when the dog is too scared to go and tree a coon, They say sorry cull dog and shoot'em.. Makes a lot of since don't it ?

I totally agree with rip. A dog stuck in a hole isn't any good to me. We have a lot of holes around here that run deep. If a dog got stuck in one he ain't coming out easily. Shelby D. Sawyers I take it you haven't had a dog stuck in a hole before or knew anyone that has. I saw this link on here the other day http://www.wbir.com/news/green/stor...082&catid=2 .

As one of the other posters said I guess it depends on where you live.

Around here we don't have big holes like the one in the link. We probably get in a hole 2-3 times a year so I'm not going to try to break my dog off holes.

Really? Is that necessary? There is a difference in correcting a dog and beating it senseless for doing what you trained it to do.

Every time I read a post on here about a dog doin' something wrong all people have to say is beat the dog or shock the dog. It's a darn shame when that is the first thing people think of in order to TRAIN a dog. Beginning to think those dogs tree coon out of fear and not for the pleasure of pleasing their handlers.

I've smacked my dog for misbehaving but ONLY when it was something that was warranted. NOT for doing something that i trained her for. I tell you what...my dog listens pretty darn good. I tell her WAIT and that she stops on a dime and gives you change and that was done without beating her or shocking her.

Just because people have different methods to train their dogs doesn't mean they are inferior.

Whats common sense have to do with it? I do not quite get where you were headed with that. I have worked a dog in a hole abunch and he had enough common sense to not do it anymore. I tell you what I am out here coon hunting for enjoyment and I can tell you guys I definatly do not enjoy walking to a hole so I break them. I comp hunt also if someone thinks that matters.

Gotta wonder ? you guys who claim that you have broke your dogs from treeing in a hole exactly how does that dog decide when to tree and when to leave dodge before the juice hits him? How about a hole at the base of a tree? How about a hole in the side of a creek bank that goes up? And when these hole broke dogs do have one go in a hole what exactly are they supposed to do? come back to you so you can give em hell for quittin that track, How would you know the coon went in a hole and my hole broke dog did as i (trained) i mean shocked him to do? or if he just quit a track? No wonder theres so many screwed up dogs out there. COMMON SENSE

I tend to agree. We have a variety of terrain her in MO. and some holes can be dug and others in rocky hills can't. I expect a dog to come to me out of the hole when I call so I can lead him away to strike a new track like leaving a hollow tree. If you shock a dog for treeing in the ground then they would need to try to strike a new track in a hurry to avoid taking a minus in a nite hunt.

In the few years I've been huntin I've figured out that dogs are smarter than we like to think sometimes. If one has any sense they can learn that them ground holes bite and trees don't. They also can learn that comin back to the truck is unacceppable no matter what. My female put one in the creek bank tonight I'm pretty sure, and I caught her off a tree about a mile through the country with the meat. She did not tree the first track she ran, but she knows what happens at the truck when I've not called for her to come in.
