Exotic Animals???

I was browsing the internet and got to looking at owning an exotic animal. Does anyone on here own a monkey or know anyone who does? Are they good pets or more trouble than they are worth? Also does anyone know were someone could get pet Squirrels or Raccoons at? Any info will be appriciated. Thanks

Exotics should stay exotic. Trust me when you get an exotic it 25 times worse than having a 2 year old permanently.I have dealt with Monkeys and Macaws. They belong in a zoo. It is nothing like having a dog. They are constant care and vet bills are about 10 times what a dogs is. My advice is spend a couple days with someone who has one and I am talking days and nights then you will forget all about getting one.

MONKS

I have heard monkeys are mean and will bite you... I watched a show on 48-hours or Dateline, I forget which it was. But a celebrity bought one and it was fine till about a year old. Then it bit her and she had too have 12 stitches.. And other people with monkeys was on there saying they wreck their house and attacks house cats, dogs, humans !!! I would'nt want to take the chance...Coons are the $hits as well, my friend had one and it turned mean as well, And was in his trash, closet, cabinets, and what ever it touched it destroyed !!! I saw the little $hit do it first hand.... GET A HAMSTER !!!!

check your local laws as well. If I remember correctly NC is pretty strict on exotic laws.

Don't do it.

Monkeys DO NOT make good pets. They are one of the worst animals to get bitten by.The bacteria in their mouth can be deadly to humans. If you get a coon, have it spayed or neutered before it matures.I just don't think wild animals make good pets. I'am sure there have been exceptions though.

exotic animals

I do wildlife rehab and wild animals make AWFUL pets. They are very aggresive when grown, make terrible messes, and end up not able to fend for themselves and usually dumped once they hit breeding age. Monkeys are pure H*LL!!

One thing no one has mentioned yet is the chances of zoonotic disease from primates. Shot records can easily be faked ... not worth the it in my book.

Thanks for all the info on Monkeys. I had heard about them having contagious diseases but never though m,uch of it. Do the smaller monkeys such as capuchin, and spider monkeys serve just as much danger as say a chimp? Also what is the easiest and cheapest so called "Wild" animal that you could keep as a pet?

pets

Check with your states laws regarding wild animals. Wildlife resources can tell you what is legal in your area. There was a lady near here with a litter of raccoons and she was fined $500 each. She had 4 or 5.

I had one but she wasnt very friendly. I ended up givng her to my neighbor , she has quite a few birds. The female i gave her paired with a male she had and they have started to mulitply. lol
Her babies are super friendly and used to being handled.
You will do best getting one that has either been hand raised or has been handled alot. You can also teach them to talk.

Ferrets are cool, if ya don't mind the musky smell...We have had a spayed female for about 5 years now...Her name is Boo..She loves to hang out with us...She goes for walks on a leash outside and even goes riding in the car...LOVES TO PLAY all the time...And swims in the bath tub.. Her liking the water so much makes it easy to keep her clean smelling. Ferrets, though, ya love em or hate em...There is not really a middle ground...LOL

I had a ferret for about a year, gave it away! It would be out of it's pen and chase everything around the house biting bringing blood to whatever it could get it's teeth into. I bathed mine all the time and could not get the smell away, also very smelly pen area no matter how clean you try to keep it. I also had a cat and a doberman which the ferret would attack both and try to bring blood until I could get it off them. Do Not get a FERRET!!!! jmop?

You are right, they can be biters...
I guess we got lucky with Boo. She is a sweet heart. She isn't a biter at all. Our 4 year old grand daughter has the whole caring for Boo process down pat and does it all by herself when she is here. BUT, I have seen some mean ones, that's for sure. I find that if I use a good quality litter once a week and scoop it a couple times during the week between cleanings, that I do not have a smell problem. At least, I am told I don't. Most folks don't even know she is around until one of the kids spots her. She loves children. I would say with Boo, my only negitive issue is her musky smell. She gets to go swimming (a bath) everytime she gets out of her cage to play.

I'd have DIED on the spot! I freaked out a couple days ago finding my BIG basement Fisher Spider...DEAD... Bob had to come down and SAVE me...from a Dead spider! I was convinced it was only one of many and that the rest were set and ready to fall on my head...LOL.. No Spiders!
I used to raise Parakeets and had parrots and did the bird show thing...LOL... You have to be totally dedicated to PERFECT care for exotic birds... they will probably outlive you... so you have to be prepared to have a person to pass them along to etc... they are expensive to buy and care for... they ARE like children and it is hard to balance them with family and friends and other pets AND keep them tame and happy. In return... they are wonderful friends... I miss mine but know they are VERY happy where they currently reside with great handlers and in some important breeding programs as well....
I worked with alot of exotic animals as a teen at the Museum of Science in Boston... and yes they are "cool" but I'm not interested in owning them as pets...
I think hounds are exotic enough...
Happy Hunting Etc... Heather

My brother did have an albino descented skunk many years ago. It was neat, but actually it was pretty close to having a darn cat.

Little monkeys are just as bad as the larger monkeys.

Here is my catalina macaw (Mango). I adopted him from a sanctuary. These can live to 100 years old. I always wanted a macaw and dont gety me wrong I like him but if I had the education I got now I would not have him. They are very very very loud. This is usually when the sun comes up. They are also very dirty and messy. They are very much 1 person animals. He chases my girlfriend around the house and means business. The cat is even scared of him.I have had friends that just thought they had to have one.I loaned Mango to them it has never lasted more than a week and they decided it was not for them. I wish I could return him to the jungle where he belongs.

They are NOT for everyone(or most!) My birds...amazons, african greys and my beautiful old scarlet macaw had to go when I got pregnant... TOO dangerous and possessive of ME to have a baby...toddler... AND... the cat SHOULD be afraid! OUCH... that bite hurts! I've got scars...
That is a lovely and wellcared for bird! Hope that things go OK in the future...perhaps the RIGHT person will walk into your life and FIT "Mango".... and you can be Macaw free.... Just dont do what I did and get 100 chickens and roosters and..... LOL...
Heather
