Curious About Giving Extra Vitamins

Just wondering from the folks that DO give vitamins to their hounds.

What kind? Example: calcium, vit c, pet tabs, ect.

How much?

If you have several hounds/dogs, do you give it to all of them?

And why you give that particular hound/dog those vitamins?

What about pregnant bitches?

Pups?

I give one Pet Tab a day to my bitch that I hunt hard. Have for about a year now. Have no idea if it helps or not. I just do it. I get mine at WalMart. I wouldn't be suprised to find out it is a waste of money but it doesn't cost much. Quality dogfeed is certainly more important than vitamins.

Thanks for your input..

That is kinda what I am trying to feel out...I just hear folks talking about vitamins for this and that. Just kinda wondering how many do this and for what specific reasons...I feel like you , may find out it's a waste of time, but, it makes me feel better knowing I am doing a little extra. ...But, all the same, if I am gonna do that extra, I want to be sure I am giving it for the right reasons.

Before everybody jumps on the quality feed thing....We all know it takes quality feed. I feed Pro Plan...Some may like it some may not..But even humans that eat right, take suppliments...We all talk about quality feed...Just thought I would take a different route on discussing nutrition.

I saw a couple years back on the PKC board that a guy named Jason Miller always gives his dog a Pet Tab every day. This is a guy who's opinions I have come to respect plus his wife is a vet. So I figured if he thinks it's worthwhile, then I'm gonna try it too. So I been giving them every since to my dog that gets worked hard. I'm sure it don't hurt. But I'd love to see some studies on whether or not it really is of any benefit.

I give my dogs a vitamin each day when I feed. I buy them from Wal-Mart and they are not very high, around 6.00$ for a hundred. I give my pups a puppy vitamin, same brand from Wal-Mart, until I switch them off thier puppy food at which time I give them the adult vitamins. Seems like it helps them some as far as thier energy and overall health. I take vitamins myself and I can sure tell the difference if I forget to take mine.

I don't supplement the dogs that aren't being hunted hard. Those that are, it runs me about $90 per dog every three months. Which is why I only concentrate on one at a time. lol I just add it to their kibble as a top dressing as it comes in powder form specifically formulated for active/working dogs.

We used to give Red Cell to our running horse YEARS ago..It sure would fire em up !! Does the canine Red Cell have the same effect on the hounds? I have seen it, but have kinda shyed away from it because mine sure didn't need anymore fire...LOL...

I tried it a few years ago, all things being equal....makes 'em run hot (nothing new) but the recovery time was too long for me.

Someone told me once to give the dogs that I show a 500mg Vitamin C tablet every day. Supposedly it helps tighten up their feet. Does it really work? I have no idea. But I've been giving a couple dogs one every day for about 3-4 weeks and my 5 month old Walker's feet DO look a little tighter than they were. They sure don't mind taking them either! The ones I bought are citrus flavored, and my pup usually eats his off the top before he even starts on his dog food...

I have one 9 yr old dog I give a pet tab Plus every day and Osteo Biflex. I let the top quality dog food I feed take care of the rest. I feed the same food to a preg bitch, the pups when they are old enough to eat and throughout their lives with nothing added to their diet. I've never seen a problem with any of them.

I beleive if you are feeding a good feed vitamins are not necisary.Too much of a good thing can be harmful. I will sometimes give my older dogs some joint help but thats about it.
