I saw Bill's post about his pup getting jumped by the strays. I have been seeing a lot more of them around lately. I guess in these tough times some folks are not able to take care of their dogs and just turn 'em loose to fend for themselves. Obviously this could lead to big problems for all of us in a lot of different ways....Anybody else seeing an increase in strays also?

we have LOTS of them usually at the first of season, but the deer hunters usually take care of them.

..rescues are seeing tons..... not good times with the economy as it is. Not great for hound hunters reputations...
Our area in MA has no problem with the dogs... just the cats... enough yotes around to take care of the cat populations but... it's pretty tough to see people not able to deal with their pets and just turning them out....

Be careful out there with your hounds and strays!

We have had a stray problem here for years.

A few years back there was an animal control measure being put in force here but it envolved too much of all that goes along with those things. I'll just leave it there, but I and some others put a stop to it before it was inacted. It was not easy to do! We had and do have an ordinace in effect that would control the problem but it is not inforced.

No, there has not been an increase here because of the economy. It is more a matter of people letting them run loose and breed at will.

The stray dog (and cat) problem created a situation in our county where an AR group raised THOUSANDS of dollars to start a kill-shelter. Along with it came their proposed laws that would have curtailed our hunting with hounds along with requiring registering (licensing) all dogs, etc. etc. & an animal control crew trained by HSUS complete with an animal control truck they had purchased. The hound owners and agriculture people (we raise poultry & beef in this area) were able to form an organization that caused this incorporated 501-C group to disband. However, we don't know the disposition or plans for those funds that are purported to be as much as $30,000. And we don't know if this AR group will reform with a new plan of attack in this county as they are now keeping their activities very quiet.
Mostly, the farmers & ranchers here keep the stray animal problem under control, but the CITY dwellers are asking for a kill-shelter, claiming people from the rural areas are dumping their animals in the city.

over-joyed by some rescue group efforts. i can see where strays are a problem as i live in a small town. but cats are my own personal problem here. and they do kill squirrels and rabbits...and i have alot of them as well. i have more game than in the country. LOL! we don't see many dogs roaming loose in town. the rescue group...decided to rescue greyhounds. lady meant well but 5-8 of them running in a small back-yard was too much for their neighbors. we don't allow kennels of any kind in town, so therefore they were in her home as well. welll....neighbors said "enough" new law was passed...and now? we have a total 3 pet limit!! which means, if you have 2 cats can i have dog or one other cat. or if three pets total,,,just that. you are at limit. it put a big dent in what i wanted to do with my coonhounds and as law came out with my new litter...i had to let puppies go that i didn't want to! it really sucks! all because of a rescue group....

what floors me is you'll see these so called rescue people with their gang of poor rescued dogs/cats...and they'll all take over a home! and that isn't rescue ...it is "HOARDING"!!! i just met one of the folks this past summer. has 15 odd cats and wants to find them a home. when you inquire about this or that one...some comment comes up as to why "fluffy can't leave just yet"!! LOL!

stray dogs as a pack....sure are agressive as no fear of humans. dump-outs are a sore subject too. very cruel to do...any dog can find a home on the internet.

It is unfortunate that people tend to lump all rescue groups into the same category. The situations where people have an overload of animals in their homes living in squalid conditions is not charactaristic of VALID rescue groups. Many of these rescue groups are 501-C and they coordinate with one another across the whole country. They pull SPECIFIC breeds from shelters (depending upon the group's affiliation), arrange foster homes and then permanent adoption to qualified new owners after the dogs have been spayed or neutered. It seems MOST people seem to base their opinions of rescue groups based on the media information about those who are apparently fanactical "kooks." The media does not know nor care about the valid rescues because there's no sensationalism. Horror and shocking stories make the news. There WAS a positive story on a morning program a couple of days ago. It showed a 3-legged (front leg amputated) Golden Retriever that had been rescued from a shelter by a Golden retriever rescue group. This dog had been adopted and had scared away burglars attempting to enter the premises of the adoptive family while they were at home.

Either way...I can see on the horizon a lot of "knee jerk" regulations and local laws that could impact our hounds & hunting....and it isn't good.
