How old is too old?

Autumn in coming 8 yrs. old in June. I really would like to breed her one last time. I want a pup from her and our male Zam. She is in top health and doesn't act like she is older, still acts like a pup at times. Do you think it's possible to breed her at her age and get a nice litter of pups from her? Or is she past her prime and that dream cross is just that, a dream?

She is inside now, I couldn't bear the thought of her out in all that cold weather at her age. She is a true couch potato and hopes we don't remember to put her in her kennel at night, so she can spawl out on the couch or in my daughter's bed with her at night. She is a bit spoiled, I know. But she is in good body weight, her teeth aren't ground down and she still loves to hunt.

What do you think?

I personally wouldn't. I bred an 8 year old female, it ended up being very costly...lost all but 1 pup, and lost my female from complications a while later. If she has any offsping around, I'd try to find one and breed that way.

There have been several dogs on here breed at 8 years or older. Personally I think it depends on the dog and the condition it is in. I would take her to the vet and have her evaluated first. Also be prepared for the worst (c-section and so on).

Been through the C-sections before. All young dogs. Everyone of them retained 2 or more pups after whelping more then half of them. That part would be no big deal. Costly, yes, been down that road, so nothing new there. The vet has given her a clean bill of health. Had her in to him in Dec. and he said she would be fine to have another litter of pups.

What I want is peoples input on their experiences with breeding an older female. No, their are none of her daughters around here. All out of state and no one would give them up anyway. Not unless someone knows where I could perhaps pick up a grand daughter to her.

Her full registered name is:

CCH GRFCH GRCH 'PR' BNL Indian River Blue Autumn

If you know someone who has a litter of her grand pups, let me know.

i will see if i can find the guy that had a pup that autumn was the grand mother of boy was that a real nice pup looked like autumn i will let you know what i find out. julie will be 9 in june and is carrying a litter now was bred to a littermate to the 2008 world champion she is not far enough to tell if she took but sure is looking good.
as autumn has had pups previous i see no reason she can't be bred being she is still sound and acting good.
i al;so have julie inside with me but there isn't a night that she diesn't want to go hunting i have to be careful and keep her leashed or she will go hunting she was high scoring english female at this past years english sectional. last summer she stole the whole litter from my lab even came down with milk to feed them she made several more attempts to steal them back i'm going to miss that old girl when she is gone but the way she looks and acts she will be around a while

age is not a factor

if the female is in good shape have her vet checked if the vet feels she is in good enough shape to have a litter them go for it !

i bred my sandy female she was 9 and will be 10 to evans red joe seman last fall she had 10 heathy pups and the seman was 17 years old so age is not a factor !

My female's was last bred just after her 8th birthday. I am concidering breeding her again about the time she turns 10. Her health is great and she doesn't look or act her age. I know that things could go bad but I'd love to get another litter from her.

I think it depends on the health of the female. I have a 10 year old I am getting ready to breed she is in great condition and has been vet checked. Things can go wrong no matter what age a dog is.
