Old Joe & red mange......

Old Joe I thank you for the info. Took Earl to the vet today and guess what? He's got the red mange!!! Vet said give him a dip in this stuff that you mix a tablespoon of with a gallon of water. Ole dog is a fair hound so I went ahead and spent the money. Have to dip him once a week for 6 weeks he said it should clear up with the dip and some antibiotics. This is the first time I ever had a dog to get it (actually he already had it when I got him). Thanks again.

Canine demodicosis (Red mange) is caused by a hair follicle mite. You may be dipping your dog with mitaban, which is used often. Your dog may respond well to the dip and start to look normal, but dipping must continue until two negative skin scraping are found. Some dogs can not be cured and the condition may recur.
I wish you the best.

Thanks guys. Vet done the skin scrape and let me look at it. I saw two of them wiggling around and two smaller ones. The vet did me give Mitaban dip told me to put him in a wading pool (or something of the sort) and mix the mitaban with a gallon of water and keep pouring it all over him. Its the worst on his legs and feet. He does have a little spots on his snout and throat. Gave me enough to dip him once a week for 8 weeks. Highball got a rash back during the winter but it cames from mites when I changed his straw out. Gave him a bath every 3 days with iodine shampoo cleared it right up. I have been giving this dog the same and it was'nt getting any better. Thats why I went ahead and took him to the vet.

One other thing. The vet said this could be hereditary(sp) somehow. Maybe parents or grandparents had it. Something to do with the immune system. He said most dogs build up a tolerence to these kinda things. Could be not proper care?Anybody ever heard that before or can tell me more about what he was talking about?

Red Mange

A vet told me it is hereditary and only passes from the female, males can get it but they can't pass it on to offspring. I have a female that never showed any signs of it but she had a pup that the vet diagnosed with it. Good Luck

Thanks for the info Kenny. After I got to thinking about it, I do remember the vet saying mother or grandmother may have had it. Hound has excellent breeding his dam is homers little angel.
