Huntting In Snow Storm Last Night

WE MADE 6 DROPS GOT 5 COON AND 2 DENS SEEN COON IN ONE DEN
NOW COMES THE GOOD PART AND HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN THIS, WE SINGLE DUMP OUR DOGS A LOT WE TURNED MY HUNTTING BUDDYS BUTCH DOG IN THE LAST SPOT WE HAD TO DRIVE THROUGH A FIELD TO GET TO THE WOODS WHEN WE TURNED HIM LOSE IT COME A SNOW STORM (IT WAS COMING DOWN) THERE WAS NO SNOW ON THE GROUND WHEN WE TURNED HIM LOSE, ABOUT 10 MIN WHENT BY AND HE OPENED ABOUT HALF WAY THROUGH THE SECTION ( 1/2 MILE AWAY) HE TRAILED THE COON FOR JUST A BIT ON THE GROUND IT WAS A COLD , COLD TRACK, NOW TAKE IN MIND IT IS SNOWING SO HARD THAT GROUND NOW HAS ABOUT A 1/4 TO 1/2 IN OF SNOW ON IT, HE NO LONGER IS TRAILING ON THE GROUND. HE LOCATES A TREE, PRETTY SOON HE LOCATS AGAIN.
TO CUT THIS STORY SHORT THIS DOG TRAILS THIS COON TOWARDS US JUST BY LOCATING ON TREES, GOING FROM SIDE TO SIDE THROUGH THE WOODS ( HE CAME CLOSE TO US OFF TO THE SIDE ) WE TALKED ABOUT GETTING HIM ( I ASKED mIKE DO YOU THINK A COON WILL LAY OUT IN THIS STUFF) WELL HE WENT PAST US AND GAVE THAT LOAD THE GUN COME AND GET HIM BARK NOW I HAVE BEEN COON HUNTTING FOR OVER 50 YEARS THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER SEEN A DOG TRAIL A COON FOR OVER A 1/4 MILE AND TREE IT AND HAVE IT JUST BY LOCATTING TREES. HAS ANYONE ELESE EVER SEEN THIS I HAVE TALKED TO SOME PEOPLE TODAY THAT HAVE HUNTED ALL THERE LIVES AND THEY SAY THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN IT.

NO HE DID NOT TRAIL THIS COON IN THE WIND HE BROUGHT THIS COON DOWN THROUGH THE WOODS A VERY LONG WAY JUST BY LOCATING TREES DID NOT OPEN ON THE GROUND , IN A SHORT TIME THE GROUND WAS COVERD WITH SNOW
I HAVE OWNED SOME VERY GOOD RIGE DOGS I KNOW HOW A DOG WINDS COON HE WAS NOT WINDING.

Okay, I'm jumping in on this one. You said this was a very cold track. So, basically everytime your dog located the coon had either tapped that tree or had went up that tree for a brief period of time and then came down and moved on. Because your hound is probably hunted down at this point in the season and knows how to check a tree he was able to finish this track. I'm sure the scent was stronger on the tree so that is why he was only opening on the trees. I believe your dog could still smell the coon on the ground but the scent wasn't strong enough to get him to open. Just wondering? When he finally treed was it on a big leaning tree? Okay! Now everyone can jump on my theory.

THE DOG CAME THROUGH THE WOODS A GOOD 1/8 TO A 1/4 MILE JUST TAPPING TREES NO THERE WAS NO SENT ON THE GROUND BECAUSE THE GROUND HAD A GOOD 1/2 IN OF NEW SNOW BY THIS TIME, IT WAS IN A BIG TYREE BUT WAS NOT LEANING , WE DID NOT KEEP TRACK OF HOW MANY TIMES HE LOCATED BUT HE CAM A LONG WAY LIKE HE WAS FOLLOWING A FEED TRACK BUT WAS NOT TRAILING ON THE GROUND JUST ON TREES.

Now, I'm going to ask a question. Do you think it is impossible for a hound to smell a track through a half inch of snow? You said it wasn't snowing when you turned loose. Is that blanket of fresh snow going to completely cover any scent that the coon left on the ground? I'm pretty sure the coon was laid up before your dog even opened on the track, and he was laid up before it started snowing. If we knew how old the track actually was it would help alot. Does your hound have a super cold nose? I haven't had a cold nosed hound in years, but used to love it when they would only open every five to ten minutes having covered a fair amount of ground in between barks. I also get a big kick out of walking into a tree like you described and seeing a coon laying up there covered in snow. It dont get any better than that.

I would have thought the dog was just rolling through the timber locating on every smelly old dentree and not likeing any of them well enough to stay until he found one on the outside. I believe dogs know a coon inside from a coon on the outside. They know a smelly den from a tree that has one outside. This is what I would have been thinking went on but I am prolly wrong.

SWAMPBUSTER WITH THE SNOW THAT CAME IN A SHORT TIME I WOULD SAY IT DID COVER MOST OF THE TRACK I RABBIT HUNT A LOT (MOST EVERY DAY WHEN THE SNOW IS TO DEEP TO COON HUNT) AND I KNOW HOW HARD IT IS FOR A BEAGLE TO RUN WHEN THERE IS SNOW FALLING OFF THE BRUSH AND BUSHES IN TO A RABBIT TRACK AND THERE IS NO DOUGHT IN MY MIND THE COON WAS LAID UP BEFORE HE STARTED THE TRACK AS FAR AS HOW OLD THE TRACK WAS THIS WAS OUR LAST DROP, AND IT WAS 12AM .
JIM I DO NOT BELEIVE HE WAS LOCATING ON DEN TREES HE WAS MOVING RIGH ALONG I BELEIVE HE KNOW WITCH WAY THE COON WAS GOING AND JUST KEPT DRIFTING THAT WAY SMELLING TREES WHERE THE COON HAD FED OR PLAYED IT WAS JUST IMPRESSIVE TO WATCH AND HERE THIS DOG SCALE TREES SOME HE LOCATED ON SOME HE DID NOT AND IT DID NOT TAKE HIM LONG TO TREE THIS COON HE KNEW THERE WAS A COON THERE AND HE LOOKED FOR HIM UNTILL HE FOUND HIM.

The best thing about the whole night is that it is one race that will stick in your mind for the rest of your life. I still drive by hunting spots and remember certain chases that are burned into my memory. It's alot of fun to think back to those hounds. I guess thats one reason we do this. Take Care.

I have seen dogs do this... that coon never went up all of those trees. In fact, I would be willing to bet that dog was getting up on those trees to get a better wind of that coon sitting on the outside. I have a dog that does this all the time. He sounds like a nice dog.

My dog does that when we're in the woods a lot. She'll get up on a tree and stick her nose in the air, jump down and do the same on a neighboring tree. Sometimes she leans way back when she's doing it. She'll "wind" in the middle of an open area too. I've seen her stand on her hind legs to get a better whiff of something.

Sounds like a right talented dog you have there.

I live about 35 minutes east of Grand Rapids, Mi. I had an old dog many moons ago that if the wind was blowing you could not force him to go any direction except into the wind. I know this isn't uncommon, but I haven't had another one. I have hunted in Indiana several times and loved it. I did really good one year at Walker Days and we hunted around Howe Indiana. Some of the best hunting I have ever seen. I scored 1550 plus and we had a blast.
