Big Cats in the Southeast

Has anyone had any encounters with big cats in the southeast? I've heard several stories of black panthers and recently there has been several folks claiming to have seen a big cat that looks like a mountion lion around here. I've never seen any big cats around here myself but was wondering if anyone else has......

longshot......

Well i dont believe in ufo's or bigfoot but there are big black cats cougers, leopards, jaguars, pumas or whatever you want to call them cause i'm no expert. A program on national geographic showed that these black cats had migrated into northern mexico, if they can live there they can live in the southeast united states. Its just a matter of wether or not some have came this far north or if a few have survived here all these years in the vast swamps and wilderness. There's no ? that bobcats are out there and around here its pretty rare to see one, if there were only a small percentage of black cats compared to bobcats the chances of seeing one would be very very slim....

Well I tell ya. I live in NE Wisconsin and where I live there have been sightings of cougars in our county for years. People have taken pics of the animals and have seen their paw prints.

DNR hasn't done much cuz no one has been hurt, no livestock has been taken etc. Those buggars can survive 'bout anywhere.

I was in the Smoky Mountains hiking this past fall, my wife and I were in an area called Greenbrier. We were about 4 miles back on a trail called Injun Creek Trail. I kept telling her it felt like something was watching us. We were walking up a slope when I heard something from across the other side of the creek, when I looked that way I saw what I swear was a mountain lion. I have hunted and hiked for alot of years and this was no animal I have ever came across in the woods. I've seen bear,coyotes,fox,badgers,deer...etc. What I saw that day did not match any of the above. There was also some reports from the Smoky's that a researcher had been doing about the same time we were there that said they had spotted some in that area as well.

So, I do believe they could be anywhere, what would keep them from roaming across the country where they once lived and were hunted out or forced out by human interactions??

I treed a Sasquatch one time....

Just pickin' guys...

I know a lot of people feel they are out there, but it's like I tell my students at school when we discuss this...do y'all have any notion at the sheer number of bear and coon and squirrel dogs/hounds roaming all over western NC from Oct to Feb every year, not to mention the deer hunters but yet nobody ever just happens to tree or kill one of these mysterious black cats...and you know today if one got treed it would either be shot and pictured or somebody would whup out a cell phone and get a pic in a tree---but anytime you hear of some of these "credible" pics and do a little digging something don't match up...or you find out that it was a captive and turned out, etc, etc, etc....

Anyways, I'll probably get "et" by one some night for doubting, but until then I am a skeptic....lol

PS--Did y'all know that a lot of scientist do not think that real black mountain lions/ cougars exist? ...big black cats on this side of the world are jaguars which do come with a black paint job? Now even if there is a rare black genetic freak out there why is it that almost every one of these sighting is of a "black panther" instead of a regular ol brown one?

I saw a black panther last summer while hunting. Scared me to death. I had a pup that wouldn't come on in to the truck and so I left my buddy at the truck and walked up into a holler to get her and while stopped using the tracker I spotted a set of eyes walking toward me about sixty or seventy yards away up a logging road. I dropped the tracker and pulled my pistol and it kept walking till it was about thirty yards away and then abrubtly turned and went down the hill and I never saw it again. I picked my tracker up and got out of there quick and have never been back.

There is actually no such thing as a black cat (except domestic) anywhere in the world. About one in a billion (i'm not sure what the actual number is) cats recieve a recessive gene that makes them appear black from a distance, but they actually have light spots. Cats with this trait are called melanistic. It's the opposite of being albino i guess.

What i want to know is why NO ONE has EVER killed one if so many people claim to have seen them. Any video you see is complete BS, and they are all about as clear as a video of a ufo.

Kill one, take pictures with it, and I'll believe it. (No photoshop either, lol)

lol...I really did see some big cats a couple of weeks ago. It was four in the morning and dark so, they didn't necessarily have to be black but they were dark colored.

coon dawg is right, most hunter's are GREAT at exaggerating, and some actually sit there long enough after they see a house cat and make themselves believe that it was a black panther, and now they honestly believe that they saw one, and you can't tell them differently.

I tried to shed some scientific truth on this post early on but the '' MOD- GODS '' didnt like it and used the edit knife on me..

Let me be clear,,, THERE IS NO SUCH SPECIES CALLED BLACK PANTHER. They are a rare melanistic fase of cougar/leopard/jaguar...Extremely rare..

Scroll back up and re-read Chapmans post.. He nailed it exactly. There '' could'' be a few cougars running around , but the chance of a black one is astronomical.

Now, that being said , I did once see 3 pink elephants cross the road one night after I left the bar...Thats the shore nuff truth..

Now Sick me again moderaters!!
