Heat Cycle Question

Say a female hound comes in heat February, and August each year. You breed the female in February, and she has pups in April. Will she come back in heat in August,or will she come back in heat 6 months after she had the pups which would be October?Anyone have experience with females having pups, and heat cycles?

I was told female will come in again 6 mos. after pups are weaned.

My female was bred in April, whelped in late June, pups weaned in August (6 wks). She then came in heat again in February.

So for me it was 6 mos. after pups weaned.

I'm sure you will get differing statements, a lot of dogs are different.

This year, for some reason, a lot of guys are reporting females coming into heat for a few days then going out only to come back in full again a few weeks later.

I would watch your female close say 6 mos from time pups are born till 6 mos from time they were weaned off . Good luck. It will be interesting to see what others have to say. Did you ask a vet?

Good luck!

Doug's advise is good. I might add that there are some females on 9 month and yearly cycles. Each female is different and it sure is hard to plan when they may come in. Mother Nature will fool you every time.

I did ask a vet's secretary, and she said that if the female was real consistant about coming in every six months then having pups wouldn't make any difference. She said the female would come in as usual. This didn't seem right, but i didn't question the information because i didn't know.
One guy e-mailed me,and said his female came in six months after having pups.Doug your female came in six months after weaning pups.If she does either of these i'll be very happy, but if she comes in heat in August like normal then i don't go to the world semi finals.I've been holding off on sending in my entry, but have decided from this post that i'll go ahead, and send in the entry.
Redtick, she has been real consistant about coming in every six months.I've heard of others that weren't,but she does.
