I have a walker, st. bernard, and a chocolate lab. Should I bring them in when the temperature drops into the single digits? Should I ever bring them in? Tongiht, I brought the lab and walker in to the garage and I'm letting them sleep in my haul box in the back of my truck. My st. bernard is in a large kennel in the garage. Our garage is about 50 degrees. It's 3 degrees outside with a windchill of -20 and the wind gusts to about 20 mph. I think i made the right decision. What do you all think?

my dog stay out year round it doesnt hirt them bed them down good and they r ok we have 2 foot of snow on the ground now and is is 5 degreast out now and they r just find and i have dog aged from 6 months old to 7 yrs.

i would have left them outside normally but with the wind gusts and wind chill I had to bring them in.

I just keep an extra close eye on mine... make sure they ahve fresh straw every day, and try to keep as much ice from building up in the kennels as I can.

Would it be bad to throw some rock salt in a kennel?

I leave mine out. I like cj just make sure box is full of straw and opening is facing opposite the wind.I dont fault a guy for being cautious just shows you care. CJ If I get alot of ice I put down layer of straw on kennel floor as well it makes for a mess to clean up but saves you nd them from busting your behind.I would think salt would be hard on their feet over time.

Heck that ST Bernard probably likes it that cold.Probably in 50 degree garage having heat stroke.

i have my dog on a deck and i us rock salt and scrape it doen evely day all my dog house have flapes and i put down fresh straw evey day and they have heated water buckets

If they eat salt it can kill them so I wood be carefull.

I just let my hound out for a break and he took off. I know he didn't get a whiff of coon scent on a night like tonight. I have 3 1/2 acres and he's not on the property. i checked. This prooves he could care less how cold it is outside. He'll be in later or he can just stay out all night. He knows where his dog house is. Ther other two are sleeping pretty in the warmth.

I'm wondering since he was in the haul box if he thought it was time to go hunting when I let him out. Probably my fault he took off. who knows!! most of our dogs mistakes are often our own fault.

I saw one guy the other day covered his dogs igloo with hay bales all the way around in like a hay igloo. I'm sure this would work great!!

My father in law put a heat lamp inside his dogs house like some people use for feeder pigs. That was probably good but I'm sure the dog hated the light all the time.

we have both of our nitech walker dogs in the house the female is 9 yrs old and we bred her the other is my nitech stud that i baby alot anyway but when it gets cold they ome in and sleep in crates

So long as the dogs are out all the time they will be conditioned for the cold. I have to explain this to my wife all the time. I keep them well stocked with straw, especially when it's cold. I would prolly bring them in in extreme cold, say -10 and colder without wind chill.

Young pups are a different story, my dad had one about freeze solid many years ago when a blizzard came through one nite. Brought him in the house and thawed him out and he turned out to be a great coondog. I'd make sure pups had a warm place in the garage.

my walker male came home about 1:30 a.m. let himself in the garage. he knows if he pushes on the door with his head real hard it'll come home if the dead bolt's not locked. he actually almost set off our alarm. glad he's home. he was about have froze when he came in.

i also leave mine out all year. they're bedded good and it dont bother them at all.
i was out deer hunting yeaterday and tracking a wounded buck until midnight and i wasnt that cold.
its -2 plus 35 mph wind. the news said its 35 below with the wind chill.
i know guys out west that have big game hounds and the are outside and HUNTING in serious sub-zero temps. it wont hurt them if they're conditioned to it.

They are just fine outside. As long as they have lots of straw and good quality dog boxes they will be tip top. Who wants a coondog romping all over their house, and I get sick and tired of taking them out to pee every hour.

Physiologically and biologically speaking, it is harder on your dog to take them in and out of severe weather. Dogs are not people.

Yes, they should have a good shelter.

Yes, they should have plenty of clean bedding.

Yes, they should have plenty of water.

Yes, they should have a good diet.

Otherwise, you are not doing your dog any favors even though it may make you fell better.

I have my old dog on a chain this year and that is a first for me. All these years, never had one tied out on a chain. And his house is a blue plastic barrel. Another first for me. I feed him twice a day, premium quality dogfood, plenty of it flooded with hot water. His barrel has a plywood floor with a folded fleece saddle blanket tacked down on the plywood. No straw. Anyone who watches him come out of that barrel can see he is warm as toast. It was -7 last night. Any healthy dog kept dry and well fed can handle subzero temps. No problem.

I think last night will be the last time I bring them in. i think after reading all of these posts I am fully re-convinced. I've always known the dogs are fine in this weather if they are high and dry. i have seen my lab swim accross a frozen pond and never bat and eye lash. my hounds the same way. Not to mention: St. bernards are from Switzerland.
