question

If you are hunting a wildlife management area and your dog strikes a coon on the wma and trees on private land at 3am what do you do?

Ive always wondered what everyone else does in this case. It probably isnt the right thing to do but I dont wake anyone up that time of morning I usually rush in snap my dogs and get the heck back on the wma I dont take the coon or shine the light around much. Luckily I havent had this happen often but it has happened a few times. I would just like to know what everyone thinks is the "right" thing to do.

We have a right to retrieve law. So I got get my dog, and get out. LIke you said, I try not to shine my light around , and just get the dogs and get out. And as long as I dont have a firearm on me, Im fine.

But, if it's 7-8 pm... or I can tell someone is awake or is watching, I will go confront them, and explain what's going on. Might even earn permission to hunt some places.

depends on the scenario i guess. i got permission to hunt most of the surrounding land where i hunt plus i don't hunt near houses to begin with. if i end up treed close to a house its a freak accident for sure. if I'm familiar with the people and area i shoot it out if not i snap dog and leave.

I go in and get my dog, did it several times this year, but once I headed back to the truck and found a land owner that was truly upset, I introduced myself and explained what I was doing, his reply was "I'm not stupid young man I know what you were doing, but the next time your dog trees a coon on my property and you don't shoot it out I will take your dog and hunt him the way coon hunting is suppose to be done with a snap of a 22 at the end of the run," I hunted his property several times this fall and he was at every tree we treed, that old boy is a dead eye with that old single shot 22, Just opened a Christmas Card from him today and a note inside that said thanks a he is looking forward to next year, Never would of thought I would make a friend by tresspassing.

There are some really nice land owners out there that understand and good people. Us hunters are mostly very good people ourselves. Wish every landowner understood accidents do happen. And in my opinion trespassing at 3am is more respectful then beating on his door to ask to go to a dog. I dont turn on private land without permission but ya guys know how it is when you get after a coon if there is a farm that dont allow hunting within distance they will try their best to get to that farm as they know its a safe haven.

Couple weeks ago I hunted a private farm with permission and hit a coon on it and it ran and fell treed about 50 yards behind someones house at like 3am. Barely could hear the hound treeing so we walked in with rifle but we were hunting a big area come to find out it was on private unposted land but, still we went in..spotted the coon on the way in and snapped the dogs and left out.
