Toyota Check Engine

So I just bought a 1989 Toyota pickup. Drove it about 100 miles home and when I'm a mile from the house the check engine light pops on. I've rode in several Toyota trucks and noticed the engine light on but was wondering why it might be on? It ran like a top all the way home.

Good old used car dealer trick is to un-hook the battery when the light comes on and it'll re-set it......the light wont come back on for a couple of days.....i'd bet money whoever you bought it from will tell you "Well that thing wasn't on before".....

maniac is correct most likely a sensor, just check the oil to be safe, Try turning the key off while driving, resets it. If truck runs good and lite is still on put a piece of black tape over the lite!lol!

Disconnecting the battery will work if you just want to turn the bulb off. If I were you, I would go to auto parts store and buy a cheap code tester. Connect the tester to the main computer connection and it will tell you all the codes that are active in the vehicle. The book that comes with the code reader will give you the code cause per the number it reads from the test. Very simple and inexpensive..will fix problem correctly. If you just dissconnect battery, this will not fix what could be a major problem with your vehicle. Hope this helps...

Brandon

FYI: It most likely is a sensor as others have said above, but a bad O2 sensor and other sensors can cause your vehicle to run very rough or not at all and can cause other problems as well...

Its a toyota! Drive it and dont worry bout the light. I've seen lots of em come on for no reason. If its been wrecked then it'll come on even if theres nothing wrong. I got a 97 and a 01 and the check engine light comes on but nothing is wrong with either one of them. Toyotas just seem to do that. They are tough as they come so dont worry. If it gets on your nerves then just get used to taking the battery cables off or drilling the light out.

Most likely an oxygen sensor. about 60 bucks on ebay. most auto zones can analyze it for you.

Well the truck runs great, so I guess the salesman put a slick on me. I'll look into the sensor if there are any problems.

Does your truck have a modified exhaust? i cut the muffler off mine and had duals put on. thats when mine started actin up. probably doesn't matter, i was just wandering.

Auto Zone will check it for free

They have the code readers and books for just about any vehicle and don't care to look at it for you at no charge. Also, you may have a small vacuum leak, not big enough to make it run bad but the computer is picking it up. Check the hoses for dry rot cracks at the fittings.

Cole , the light puts the computer in a default mode. Truck will run fine, just not at an optimum performace level or fuel economy.

Not a good idea to play sensor roulet. A Auto Zone around will hook up and tell you for free like others have said. I have a 98 bought new that the lights been on since 2000. A little electrical tape over the EGR fault and I don't even know it's there.

Mines a 98 also..My thermostat is stuck open and I was messing with it..I pulled the heat sending unit off it..Thats when mine came on..Dont know if that caused it or not..Its still off after about 300 miles though after taking the hot cable loose.

i had my 94 toyota at the dealership last year for a safety recall
during the winter and the check engine light had been on for about a week

mechanic said that because the catylytic converter (spell check)had been removed it would cause it to come on when it got cold outside
as the weather warmed up it hasnt been back on
havent had it back on this year

I had an 89'six cylinder and drove with the check engine light on for over a year. My truck stalled one day while driving and needed to be towed to the garage. Driving with a bad o2 sensor caused the computer to die (So the mechanic said-and I am fairly confident in him). And a used computer and installation cost me around $450.00 to fix. O2 sensor cost around $25 to 30 tops!

On anything 96 and up with the OBD II system about 75% of all code checks return gas cap problem (loose cap, leaving vehicle running while pumping gas, bad gasket on gas cap, and a very small % of the time it is either a leak in the venting system or a return line on the fuel system).

Go into any autozone and they will do a free diagnostic test for you and can also look the code up and do a print out with the code definition and how to troubleshoot the problem
