Needing ADVICE

I have raised registered Bluetick coonhounds for 35 years and over the years I have come on to several problems. This one really has me buffaloed.. We owned a couple females that would whelp OK, would clean their pups, then kill them and eat them. One female even waited until the pups were three weeks old. Then ate all but two. She would have ate them but I took them away from her.... Short of shooting these females, does anyone have any idea what causes this....

It's a genetic hormone inbalance. Pituitary gland in the brain is supposed to keep levels in check...but that doesn't appear to be what's going on.

Sometimes you just hate to shoot a super well bred female without trying every option...

If she's a good coondog...you could always have her fixed and hunt her or sell her to someone who will.

I used to have a male that would kill and eat every young pup he could get his mouth on but, was fine around a dog beagle size or bigger. I never could understand why he did that cause he was not ill at all...but im glad he is gone cause he costed me a lot of good pups and even killed some that werent mine.

I know its a different situation but, just brought back some memories.

The only thing I know and it just depends on how bad you want those pups is to raise them yourself.

We bottle feed a 9 puppy litter by bottles from 3 days old because the mother got an infection. AALLOOTT!!! of hard work but we rasied them all and all but 2 are still alive 2 1/2 years later.

We used Goats milk and it worked wonders -

Try this

I use to breed pitbulls for 13 years and I had a very well bred brood female that did this to her 1st litter she had,a guy who raised beagles told me that for some reason or another the mama loses the pups scent dont know why but he told me that once the pups are a day or two old take them away from her and take baby powder and rub it in her nose Good try to pack it I'm there and then take and cover the pups in it and give them back to her and repeat every 2 or 3 days or so,sounds crazy but she raise 3 litters with no problem and the 4 time I didn't do it thinking she got the hang of it .......ha ate every one!!!!!dumb dog

i had a beagle that would do this... good hunting dog just wasnt a good mother. i ended up selling her (not for that reason) but i just told the guy i sold her to and heard no more out of it. you could bottle feed the pups yourself or get a surrogate mother if you really wanted to raise the pups.

poop eater

For the poop eating dogs if you put meat tenderizer on their food it's supposed to make them quit.

haven't whelped too many.....

but recall a few friends having problem. one fella sold the english gyp to someone else...never ate another pup. environment? fear for her puppies? another fella, you remember ron hody? well...his gyp killed her first litter. he figured fear for her litter as well. another person's walker gyp ate the head off a pup and left body??? never touched one other pup. screw loose? doubt it.

ken...find someone else to whelp your litter. before you give up totally. might be worth a try?!

i wonder if some females are more sensitive for their puppies being handled to soon. or someone showing a lil too much interest...like children? just my opinion. a few ideas i have. good luck....

These 2 bluetick females that ate their pups reminds me of a friend of mine that had that same problem years ago. Some one told him that his female was lacking protien for some reason. So he opened up a sack of tankage & let her have at it before pups were born. She ate plenty of it & then raised all her pups normally. Not saying that a protein imbalance is the problem here but may be worth some thought along these lines. Maybe females not able to absorb the protein in your dog food at whelping time because of change in hormones and go looking for other source? Hope this helps some. Good luck. Farmboy1
