Anyone got any good breaking advice on these nasty critters. Went out tonight with one old dog and took 3 young hounds just to get them some out time. Treed one coon 15 minutes into the hunt. Then we bumped into a Porcupine. My old female barely hit it, had about 6 quills. My 2 year old blue dog that is coming hard on coons looked like Santa Clause after his bout. Other two young dogs didnt get into the ordeal. I figure they just hit it while traveling, but I want to stop this before it gets started, any advice.

ya'll keep them four legged pin cushions down there, we've already got plenty of them armor plated possums that made their way up here!!!

What the Capt. said but if the chance comes up to work them a little without pulling the quills take advandage of it just like any other off came.
If you're by your self with 4 dogs and they ALL get a mouthful you're pretty much done for the night by the time you get'em all pulled.

cj advise is not good dont do it. Ipurchased a real nice nite ch in iowa.never seen a porky. he ended up being porky nuts. best bet stay out of that area for a bit. let them forget. give it a week or two. now I live in porky country and I have found this to work. ride the rodes till you see one cross. put the shockers on cut the dog/s to the track when open weld! I mean weld! if that dont work get the bullets out. and save yourself alot of agrevation. once they hit three or four your done. just feed them the lead.

I had a nice black dog get into one so bad that he looked like he had an indian war bonnet on. He had 'em buried in the back of his mouth, all over his head, the back of one of his legs, and several in his chest. Cost me $100 to have the vet pull everything she could. They continued to beal out of him for almost 2 weeks. Got to asking around and found that a few guys that hunt porky areas have had dogs that seemed to like 'em.....
They keep the needle nose pliers in the truck....

The best thing you can do if you live where there is porky's is just hunt your young dog and pray to god he dont get into one. When he does and the very first time he does fry him with the shocking collar. Let him know that porky is wrong. Then get him on a coon right away and tell him good boy. I agree with nate once they get into 3 or 4 there gonna be hard to break.

Another method that sometimes helps is to go out and shoot everyone that you see ,they are a nusance anywhere you go .Up here the MNR doesn't really care ,also gives you something to do in the day time.

Well for me I carry the pliers in my pocket. Lotta ideas about what kind work the best but the bottom line is you better have a pair of some kind handy.
I agree with doing away every one you see. Fewer there are the less trouble you have. If you're hunting dogs that are finished in Porky country you don't have a problem but young dogs and dogs from other areas you do.
Porkys don't seem to hurry anywhere there complete plan is to roll up and cause a lotta misery.
Dogs sometimes pick them right off the side of a tree as they start up , way to slow. LOL
If you see one you can usually catch'em , even herd them around with a stick like you see when they're showing hogs. For thier size they can sure get out of a small hole, had afair size one go right thru the side vent bars on a dog box without a problem.

I live in heavy porky country. Only had one pup in past several years touch one. I pull about 30 quils and a couple days later took the pup out looking for a porky. Found a fresh road kill and let the pup go check it while wearing an e-collar. Between the quilling and tickle, he's not shown more interest in them.

With most of my pups I usually take the proactive approach. Porky's are easy to find, so take your pup for a walk when he's wearing an e-collar and give the pup a mild bump when he shows interest in one. Later you may have to reinforce the treatment once your young dog is going well on his own. I still carry pliers because it'll happen again someday in spite of my best efforts to prevent it.

If you're new to porkys watch out yourself. I've stepped on them in daylight when walking through tall grass. They often hang out and feed at night in alfalfa fields and I have learned to not walk in the moonlight without my light.

I dont agree with killing every porky you see. I used to do it, but you cant wipe them out completely. Train your dog to ignore them and you wont have a problem. It's really not that hard. If you ask me NH probably has more porkies than anywhere on earth, and I cut loose without worries. Young dogs will have quills pulled at some point, but you cant keep worrying about it. I'd rather break them off porkies than deer or coyotes...at least you can catch a porky easily and do a breaking session. I have a few active porky dens within a few hundred yards of the house, I dont worry about it much.

I havbe told you the best method to break. and I have delt with enuff porkies for ten hunters. most guys around here wont hunt my areas because there are sow many. dont try it in a trap. tried it dont work. road kill dont work. when you see one cut the dog back to the track. and weld!!!!!! don't mess with a tickel. it will quick enuff turn in to a site dill. and you do not want that. if you see one get out of your truck and walk up on it. you will see why your hounds take after them. once yor dog bites then it becomes agretion. you can beat them of but you have to be rite on the dog.

I've had a couple dogs get into them, but one quill pulling was
enough for them to decide they aren't any fun. I also carry a
pliers all the time.
