Strange Cast Scenario..

Alright Dave, I have one here for you. It's all based on when the JUDGE called it a split and his reasoning.

4 dog cast, one fast speed, 2 medium speed and one slower speed type dog. Difficult to judge, becuase they didn't pack well, but for the most part they were all running the same track... We were at the edge of a wooded area and all 4 dogs were to our right. Right in front of us a rabbit goes from left to right, goes under a log and keeps going to the left. A line is called right before the log.....

All dogs are trailing at our right, sound like they're split, but not sure because of the different speeds in the pack. Someone starts to question if there is a split, but noone confirms this, so everyone is still waiting for the dogs to score a line. Dog A starts to get closer and scores a line. the judge puts one minute on the line. Dog B, C and D still trailing to the right never approach, it's decided at that time, that it is a split track.

Handler A asked the judge if he could pick up his dog and recast? the judge says no.

Reasoning - According to the judge, technically when the dog scored the line, it wasn't on a split, so therefore you can't pick it up and recast. The Judge called it a split after the line, once he realized the other 3 dogs were running in a different direction. So Dog A which is NOW considerd on a split track must run his own track.

Common sense tells us all that it was a split, but because the split wasn't established until after the dog scored the line, do you think the judge was right by his reasoning, does he have a leg to stand on?

NO THE JUDGE IS WRONG.DOG A SHOULD HAVE BEEN PICKED UP AND STRUCK BACK IN AT 25 AND RUN THE MAJORITY OF THAT TRACK TO SCORE ANY MORE LINES.THATS HOW I WOULD'VE SCORED IT.

Let me guess, the judges dog was not the dog that scored the line. I would say you could argue that one either way. I'm curious to see what everyone has to say about this one.

Actually, the judge, right or wrong on his judgment call did do the right thing. If a split track is not called, and dog a scores the line before the split is called, then dog a can remain on the original track for another circle, before he is to be picked up and put into dogs b, c, and d. Also since this is the case. Now if dogs b, c, and d would happen to score their line before, dog a's second one, then you would put b,c ,and d in with a. for the remainder of the track. This has happened to me, kinda left up to the judgment call. At the Mcvay Mem. hunt two years ago, Bill Ashcraft was my judge and this happened in our cast. I believe even one dog didn't benefit, he did the right thing, and right call. Like I said before I don't like the splits for reasons like this here.

Also, if the judge would've called a split before dog a came through the line, then he would've been picked up to be put in with the reamainder of the pack.

WAY TO GO SUZAY!!!
I believe a MOH is going to go with his judge on this one.
Although if I were judging I would have had handler of dog A pick his hound up and get him with the pack. My reasoning would have been although we had not declared a split it was obvious that we had one.
Have I mentioned that I HATE SPLIT TRACKS!!!

Come on Dave, we cant just use the ole' common sense deal and change the rules. lol Seriously, this has happened to me, and yea even though the rules were used correctly, somethimes you miss out on some points. I think you gotta stay with the rules, or get rid of the splits all together.
