I am fairly new to this coon hunting, but when i was a kid my dad always seemed to find the coon fairly easy. After 20 yrs I have decided to take coon hunting back up with my son, we have a nice walker female and a bluetick pup thats showing great promise. We are getting plenty trees, 4-5 a night whith in 2-3 hrs time. some have been dens, The problem is i am having one heck of a time finding them, is there a trick? squallers,lens caps.... we need some advice. The way we usually do it is walk up to the tree and look for a dark spot in the tree, then turn our light very dim looking for eyes, if no luck we then crack up the volts and continue to look. we are not having much luck. I think your doing it the right way maybe use a squaller with the dim light or red lense. Give it a couple of more weeks and you should be able to find anything with the leaves being off. If you cant find a coon then,then I hate to say it but you might ought to look at your dog.

Sometimes clapping helps and if there is a grape vine going up the tree have someone shake the hell out of it while you are looking. I havent been at it to long either just a couple years but take the time to shine all the angles you never know where that sucker could be hiding.

Sometimes we take a thick stick and have someone pop it against the trunk of the tree sometimes they will look like that and i 2nd the clapping sometimes works too. Squaller or make yourself into daffy duck sometimes works as well. There is a certain squaller i forget the brand that I have actually seen coon come totally out of the tree with it blown. I will ask my hunting buddy what brand. Their kinda high best i remember but if used right will make a coon come out sometimes. I find that taking your time and shining the tree helps more than anything without a squaller or nothing...sometimes when we have given up and snap our dogs and lead them from the tree and all is quiet we will pop a light back up on the way out and boom it will be there lookin at us. Just take your time though shine it out as best you can a lot of times you will eventually spot it but they are tough if they dont look at ya with leaves on.

some of the time you can walk away from the tree 100-200 ft then turn around and they'll be looking right at ya..

also some of my buddys will have somebody call em on their cell and the coon will look at em..

I would totally agree with this statement but my father-in-law gave my son thid 3 yr. old Walker female... we hunted her all last year w/ him and had no problems, she was 85-90% accurate. very nice clover bred female, she just hunts to way deep for him....he's slowing down a bit with his age & stuck with his close hunting tight mouthed male pup.

squall,hit the tree with a stick,clap,pull vines,shake smaller trees under your shine tree. have somebody shine from a distance while someone walks under the tree loudly doing all of the above.

1. If the moon is out cut the lights out and search for a bulge on limbs.

2. Buy a second, different sounding squaller, if it does not look at the first sound try switching...the new sound sometimes makes them look.

3. Red lens on medium is good for getting them to look.

4. After looking and squalling for a few minutes with no luck cut out all lights and noise (except dogs)...after about a minute light it up again, sometimes you will catch them being curious.

5. Invite an old pro, I have one buddy that seems to find them all...

You wont find them all but it sounds like you're doing everything right. I start on low with the light, circle the tree and look. If I cant see eyes I use a squaller. Still no eyes, I go to a bright spot and look for body clumps or a tail. Still nothing, try wacking the tree with a large branch then back up and spot again. At this point, decide if ya really want to see a coon...or is the coon even there? In my area, I have a lot of coon that for some reason will stare straight up and wont look. I've found them plain as day...staring up...I'll squall at them and they just wont look. If it's really bugging you, walk away with the dog and shine from a distance...sometimes they'll watch you leaving and you can catch an eye.

My first years at coon hunting I had trouble finding coons but once I started finding them it got easier. Experience is a big help. You've gotten some good susgestions here.

I think the main problem with not finding coons when they are there is not knowing where to look. This winter when the leaves are off take note where the coons are in the tree. When the leaves go back on next spring this will help you by knowing where to start looking.

to add...grab a big stick and start beatin the bark off of the side of the tree. leavin your light off...then walk out quite a ways and shine on low and squal your head off.....they will always be on the other side of the tree branch you are looking at ...always...

if that fails i have a walker I'll trade ya for something.... he dont miss..he'll will get it done

I knew a guy one time that had trouble finding a coon in a tree. When he would go with other people they would always find the coon but when he went by himself he couldnt find the coon. So he thought about quitting because his eyes were getting bad or he just wasnt looking in the right places in the tree.

Then one day he saw an ad in the newspaper where a guy had a monkey that was trained to climb the tree and shoot the coon out. So he called the guy and the guy told him that since his dog had died he didnt have no use for the monkey so he was selling him.

So he bought the monkey and took him hunting and when the dog treed he gave the monkey the gun and the monkey climbed the tree and shot out the coon. Which seemed to work pretty good till one night the dog treed and the guy gave the monkey the gun and the monkey went up in the tree and was gone for a few minutes then climbed back down out of the tree and shot the dog.

The guy was really upset so he called the guy he got the monkey off of and told him and the guy replied " Oh, I forgot to tell you the monkey dont like LYING tree dogs either!" LOL

Wonder how the first guys dog died????

I know the feeling. I can shine a tree for 2 hours and not see the coon. my son can shine for 2 minutes and find him every time, well almost every time. lol

You have some great advise here only a couple tips I can add the 1st is if treed on a creek or water the coon will be on the side of the water ussually 2nd I like to get as far back as i can and shine most times are near the top 3rd looking for eyes is good but teach your self to look for the coon a tail hanging down or a bulge in a tree that looks out of place even when looking at them they can be hard to see

Try to pay attention to what kind of track it was before they treed. If they pushed it up a lot of times it's going to be out on a limb and if it is an old cold track it will probably be close to the main part of the tree on a bigger limb. I'm just the opposite of most hunters because I don't even mess with a dim light. I just use a spot light and look for fur. I've got a friend of mine that if he can't find it at first he'll look the tree over with the gun scope and finds a few extra coon. The longer you hunt and the more coon you see the higher percent of them you'll find.

Look for this in the tip top of a tall pine and listen to it thump


I have even had them look at a squirel call that my boys had one night. they are curious and look at somthing out of the ordinary.
I think it depends on how much they're dogged too. Alot of things can change their mind.

I used to go to a guys house and tree one on his feeder. The first time we treeed it, couldn't find it. He said watch this.
He started making a smooching sound and sure enough it played peek a boo. every time he done it it would look. I treed there a few diffeent night and the same thing, night after night.

Like others have said there are manny different ways. Sometimes you just have to try different things on different coon at different times Keep Looking Up
