The dog should be. I am never much impressed with a good handler ( tricky Handler ), but I am impressed by a good dog even when it beats my dog. A good dog can make a handler look good, but thats also vis versa too sometimes.
I'm impressed by a handler thats honest, knows the rules, knows his dog and enjoyable to be on a cast with. Even when they beat me.

the dog SHOULD matter most but these days the handler's do the winning. i know plenty of guys that can win with a good me too dog with a loud mouth.

IMO if ya got a good e-nuff dog all ya got to do is holler strike and tree and back yer dog like it's doing for you..

if slick handlers (I call em liars) call off your dog or any other crooked doings it WILL catch up with em in a 2 hour hunt..

if I call my dog honestly and somebody else calls their dog dis-honestly who won the cast/hunt??

I'd rather keep my honesty and reputation in tack than win a slip of paper..

everybody on the cast knows what happened and I like it when they say your dog should have won..

If, you have a good honest dog, that will get struck,tree and have the coon. If you are a handler who KNOWS the rules you should win a few not alll of them. If everyone brought a COONDOG to the hunts and knew the rule the "cheating handlers" cant hurt you as bad. I cant count the times Ive been on a cast with some of the sorriest dogs who should have been culled and seen the owner go back to the club and say they where cheated because they struck the wrong dog, treed when there dog want there , dog leaves the tree are bangs up slick they minus out but they where cheated LOL Know the rules bring a coon dog and it will be a lot more fun JMO Mike Cayton

You should have included "both" in your poll because that is what it takes. A good dog and a good handler. I have always had a great appreciation and respect for the good handlers as much as I have for the good dogs.

Houndsmanship is slowly becoming a lost art mainly by those who claim it is all about the dogs.

I think it takes both. A good handler can win with a dog that may not look as good as the others in the cast. A good dog can be over/under handled, and, draw minus/ not get enough points. With that being said, IMO a man or woman should just call their dog for what it does.
