Coonhounds In Trouble?

I HAVE SEEN SOME SAD,SAD COONHOUND KEEPING PRACTICES THAT DOWNRIGHT MAKE ME ANGRY. SO MANY FOLKS WANT TO GRIPE AND COMPLAIN ABOUT GOV. K9 RESTRICTIONS AND PETA AND THE REST OF THE ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUPS BUT KEEP OR KNOW OF HORRIBLE KENNEL PRACTICES AND SAY NOTHING TO ENCOURAGE BETTER UPKEEP. THIS IS WHAT HAS ME RILED AT THE MOMENT. I WAS ON A MANS PROPERTY WHERE HE HAD 12-15 HOUNDS WITH EACH TIED TO T-POST WITH ABOUT 5 FT. OF CHAIN. THE DOG HOUSES WERE NOTHING MORE THEN PEICES OF PLYWOOD NAILED TO TREES MAKING AT BEST, A POOR,POOR LEAN-TOO. ONE DOG WAS STARVED TO DEATH, LAYING THERE ACTUALLY DEAD ON THE END OF ITS CHAIN.(HE SAID IT HAD HEART WORMS) THE REST LOOKED LIKE THEY WOULD DIE AT ANY GIVEN TIME. THEY WALKED AROUND IN SIX INCHES IF FECIES AND MUD. YOU COULD ACTUALLY PLACE YOUR FINGERS A FULL INCH BETWEEN THERE RIBS. THERE WATER BOWLS WERE PLASTIC MILK CARTONS CUT IN HALF, MOST OF THEM EMPTY, AND THEY WERE OBVIOUSLY FED ON THE GROUND WHEN AND IF THEY WERE FED AT ALL. I HAVE ALSO WITTNESSED HOUNDS KEPT IN ABOVE GROUND KENNELS, 3FT. BY 8FT. WITH TWO FEET OF DOG CRAP PILED UP UNDER THERE GRATED FLOORING. CALL ME NOSEY,CALL ME WHATEVER BUT THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE. IF YOU KEEP HOUNDS IN THESE CONDITIONS, YOU EITHER DONT CARE ABOUT THEM OR CAN NOT AFFORD THEM. IN EITHER CASE, GET THEM IN THE HANDS OF SOMEONE THAT CAN AND WILL. YOU ARE A BAD REPRESENTATIVE OF WHAT WE STAND FOR. IF YOU KNOW OF CASES LIKE WHAT I AM WRITING ABOUT, DO SOMETHING. I AM SEEING TO IT THAT SOME CALLS ARE MADE IN THE MORNING. I OFFERED TO HELP THE SITUATION AND WAS TURNED DOWN. THIS IS DESPICABLE IN EVERY WAY. LETS ALL DO ARE BEST TO ENCOURAGE BETTER UP KEEP WHILE OUR DOG RIGHTS ARE BEING CONTESTED. IT MAY OFFEND SOMEONE BUT IT CAN ALSO SHOW WE CARE . THERE,I FEEL BETTER.

Your right I have seen that myself and I seen some really bad things at autumn oaks this year alot of guys had dogs on leads tied to the fence with no shade or water and it was really hot out and the said thing was it was beside the road for anyone passing by to see ! I dident think it was a good site myself but just think how it looked to people that seen the dogs passing on the road : " NOT GOOD FOR THE SPORT"

You did the right thing Lowell. Turn him in. No excuse for that. None. He may be a good guy but if he can't take better care of his hounds then that then he needs to cut back to what he can take care of properly.

Lowell, good job. We need more folks like you in our sport. Without the hounds, what would the sport be? Why is it some people do crap like this. I've seen bad conditions, probably not quite as bad as you describe, but bad none the less. I, as you did, had a fit. These people need their heads knocked.

Jason34, I agree. I have seen this too. Not this year, but last. I even asked a guy, "How about I tie your butt to a fence post, in the 90* full sun, with no water on a chain so short you can't even lay down?" (Not so nicely though) The bad part about it, he honestly didn't see anything wrong with it.

We NEED to police ourselves people!! We NEED to be sure our hounds are in the best health. We NEED to be sure they have ample water supply, food and a place to get out of the sun and/or cold wind. I better stop here, before I get my blood pressure up.

Look at it like this....Do you take your kids to the DR? Do you make sure they have milk, juices and water? Do they get at least 3 meals a day? Do they get their immunizations? Do they have a comfy, warm place to sleep? IF YOU ANSWERED YES TO THESE.....THEN WHY THE HECK DON'T YOUR DOGS??

THANKS Lowell!

Glad to hear you are going to try to help with this situation. This is something I have a big issue with... When I help with rescue there are too many people who assume ALL hounds are treated poorly and kept like that... I work hard to show people that a majority are well cared for. When rescue is called into a situation like this... IT is the image they are left with. We all have to work hard to give other animal lovers (I believe a MAJORITY of us in the coonhound world ARE animal lovers)to see our hounds being well cared for.

MA just had a vote to end Greyhound racing... I help with greyhound adoption in RI and We were AGAINST this ballot question... The Question passed and greyhound racing will be phased out by 2010. The people who voted for this believed they were doing the kindest thing for the dogs, assuming they would all be adopted as pets. WELL... MA has had a 100% adoption success for a few yrs now... and the reality is that the 2000 dogs currently racing will be moved to other states to race, where there is less regulation etc... The lucky ones will get to RI or another track with adoption programs.... many will not. All of a sudden there are sad articles in the newspapers etc.. and people who had spoken to me before the vote now realise that I knew what I was talking about...
I see the animal rights groups spending millions of dollars to get their way. I see people who love animals and mean well be deceived... I don't "get it" I don't see WHY the animal rights groups do this....
We ALL need to get out there and let people know what coonhunting is, about our hounds, about their care etc.... and we do need to help when we see a situation like Lowell saw....
Thanks again, Sorry for going on like this... but I'm still riled up about the greyhound situation....
Happy Hunting Heather

Good for you!! I surely hope someone will do something about that situation. How much does a bucket of water cost? How much does it cost to CLEAN. It's not about the $$, it's just a state of mind. If you're going to put an animal of any kind in captivity then that makes it YOUR responsibility to meet the needs of that animal. Thanks for acting on behalf of those that can't speak for themselves. May God bless you for your efforts.

Some folks shouldn't even be allowed to keep houseplants let alone a dog. Every now and then you hear about someone who couldn't make a decision to give away or shoot animals that they can no longer care for. What happens is they let them starve and to me that is a sign of a mentally ill person. They are not in their right mind to see what they should do or to choose to do it. Better that they would ask for help or just put the dogs out of their misery than to let the creatures die slowly in a mess. Now in saying that I don't mean to say that the person shouldn't be held responsible but it is a sign of someone whose pressure cooker isn't sealed right.

THIS DISCOVERY IS BEING DEALT WITH. CHARGES COULD EVEN BE FILED AS A RESULT OF INVESTIGATIONS. I LEARNED ONE THING, IF YOU WANT RESULTS FROM THE POWERS THAT BE, SUGGEST THAT YOU MAY HAVE TO CONTACT A "NEWS TEAM". WHEELS START TURNING AND FAST!!!!!!!!!!

That right there is why coonhunters have such a bad reputation. If we lose our rights as dog owners. We have no one to blame but ourselves. Coonhunters as a whole I mean.

Here is the problem... when the sherif arives he tells them to feed the livestock and don't worry about it. More laws won't help when the ones on the books won't be enforced.

its really a double edged sword.

on one hand you want something done to the person in this situation because its obvious that he is not caring for his animals. also questions how the kids are cared for (if he has any).

on the other hand, you hate to bring it to light because one bad apple spoils the pot and then the media/animals rights groups/HSUS/others will come down with a vengeance...and that is not good for any of us.

if there is some way to make or get this person to change the care of his animals, that would be ideal. unfortunately, we do not live in an ideal world.

this is so sad and I hate to think that I would loose my dogs because of some jerk acting this way. BTW, some of mine get to sleep in the house at night too...all spoiled rotten!!!

good luck with this.
