Tips for beating this Heat...

LET'S MAKE A THREAD FOR TIPS ON KEEPING THE HOUNDS COOL DURING ALL THIS HEAT!

OUR PUPS ARE SUFFERING IT'S SO HOT! THEY ARE IN THE SHADE AND EVERYTHING.

WE'VE BEEN GIVING THEM A BOTTLE OF WATER EVERY DAY TO HELP KEEP THEM HYDRATED AND TO HELP KEEP SKEETER FROM GETTING DEHYDRATED WE'VE BEEN GIVING HER PEDIALYTE AND WATER. ALONG WITH NUTRICAL AND PET TABS.

ANY TIPS FOR KEEPING THE DOGS COOL.

I THOUGHT ABOUT RIGGING SOME KIND OF SPRINKLER SYSTEM UP THAT WOULD SPRAY FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS EVERY 15 MINUTES OR SO.

MAYBE THAT WOULD HELP. I DONT KNOW.

SID JUST LAYS OUT ON THE GROUND PANTING, IT'S ROUGH ON HIM. WE'VE CUT THE PROTEIN IN HIS FEED DOWN TO NEARLY NOTHING LIKE 16 PERCENT AND HAVE CUT HIS FEED BACK.

JUST DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO.

THEY ALL HAVE FRESH 5 GALLON BUCKETS OF WATER THAT'S BEING CHANGED DAILY.

ANY OTHER TIPS?

Cooling...

... Kiddy pools if they will lie in them(and drink from them). When I had a rabbit I did 2 liter bottles of water Frozen and placed in his cage... might work in a dog house??? You can also place the frozen bottles in the pools and refreeze them. Sprinklers and misting and fans and shade. If they LIKE to be hosed down that was how I kept my greyhounds cool during their outings. (My coonhounds don't do hosing or pools...weirdos!)

MORE IMPORTANT than the dogs...PLEASE drink LOTS of water yourselves! Dehydration kills! NOT SODA but WATER!

Take care... It just hit 97 in the shade here... hounds are in with me(they are house dogs) and the AC is just at 79 and it is NICE....Blech..... I feel sorry for my chickens....

Kiddy pools

Work great.
If they get hot enough all dogs will lay in them.

I feed my hounds ice.I fill them up in the evening by noon I go out and give it to them.I also add ice to their water buckets. It also helps to spray them down with a hose to.

I freeze water bottles and put them in the dog houses.. The hounds love them.. Used it last year with a litter of 3 week old pups.. They would snuggle right up to those frozen water bottles when they got hot..

I have also thought about getting an automatic mist system.. I have found one that you can program to come on at certain times for a certain amount of times..

I also sun-shade the kennels and also on the sides of the kennels...

I know this is not practical for everyone to do, but I will post what we do for the dogs in extreme heat....

Each of our hounds has a large piece of plywood that slants off their box for shade. We also give fresh, cold water 2 X a day. The dogs that like to be sprayed down with the hose gets a good soaking. Some of 'em love it and some of 'em hate it!

Our basement is mostly used for storage and stays very cool. We have three extra large dog crates and one small crate that we keep down there at all times just in case we need them. Our Jebb dog is 11 years old and he is just miserable in this kind of heat. He is put on a schedule where he is fed early in the morning (around 6 am) and then put in the crate with a cushion (I like to spoil him lol) and a fresh bowl of water around 8 am. He stays in there till around Noon when he gets a potty break. Then, he goes back in till evening, usually around 4:30 for another potty break...If it is really hot and humid out (which it has been the past week) he stays in there till around 7 pm. He LOVES this routine and runs to that crate when he gets through the basement door. We also do this with two of our other dogs that have problems in the heat. It works really well and they are able to stay much more comfortable.

When Dawn had her pups last August, we kept them and her in our basement until they were 3-4 weeks old. It was nice because it stays a constant temperature down there....

Deb Crump (sp?) told me last year at Youth Nationals in North Carolina about freezing jugs of water to put in the dog box for traveling. Glad she did, I'd have never thought of that. Then after those jugs thawed, they had nice fresh drinking water since some clubs use well water, of which my dogs can't tolerate. We hauled our dogs in a trailer made specially for them with the advice of a vet on how much ventilation they'd need for such a long trip in hot weather. But those water jugs sure would have made them even more comfy!

At home though, of course they get fresh water a few times a day. Our Vet told us not to give ice cubes in it though, said something about putting their system in shock (?).

Scrappy can't take the heat at all well. He goes out, and in just a few minutes at 80*+ he's right back in and has his own fan to lay in front of. Poor thing acts like he's dying! LOL, kinda comical to be honest, because he knows he's spoiled.

FYI....I FOUND AN EXTREMELY SIMPLE WAY TO KEEP YOUR DOGS HYDRATED AND COOL WHILE YOU ARE HUNTING!

SURE YOU CAN CARRY BOTTLED WATER, BUT WHEN A DOG IS DRINKING OUT OF THE SPOUT IT JUST POURS OUT EVERYWHERE.

I BOUGHT ONE OF THESE ONE NIGHT, IT'S GOT A POP SPOUT LID AND YOU CAN ALMOST CLOSE THE HOLE TO WHERE IT JUST DRIBBLES OUT. IT DOSENT COME OUT SO FAST IT POURS OUT ALL OVER THE GROUND, BUT IT'S FAST ENOUGH TO WHERE THEY WILL KEEP DRINKING.

SID AND OUR OTHER DOGS LOVE TO SEE ME WITH THE WATER BOTTLE IN MY HAND WHILE THEY ARE HUNTING! LOL.

SID HAS FIGURED OUT HOW TO SUCK ON THE THING NOW! HE DOSENT LICK ANYMORE! IT'S LIKE A DOG BABY BOTTLE!
