Can you tell by a dog's looks?????????

Hey yall, a couple of these old guys I like to hunt with have allways told me things to look for in a dog's looks that they say more often than not directly relate to the dog's ability and tendencies in the woods. Can you tell some things by looking at a dog about what kind of hunting dog it will be?? Some of the stuff they say is......

1. Knot on back of head means tree dog.
2. over bite means fox dog
3. short snout means worthless mutt.
4. long skinny snout means fox dog
5. dark colored bluetick means cold nose
6. Light colored bluetick means no brains and crazy acting.
7. whiskers on the snout means good tree dog.
8. Long ears means good dog
9. short eared means a super hot nose with no cold trailing ability.
10. Big block head means a smart dog.
11. dark eyes means smart dog
12. light colored funny looking eyes means crazy acting stupid dog.
13. fat and loose skin on bottom side of neck of bluetick means good track dog and straight dog.
14. get ready for this one....................... Big butthole means good treedog........ LOL LOL LOL

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT THIS STUFF??

I don't about that stuff but I had one with sort of yellow looking eyes and she was the nuttiest dog I ever saw. Wasn't mean or ill but was as shy and backwards as a dog can get.

You forgot the one that says if a dog has 3 hairs growing out of the mole on his chin he'll be a tree dog, if he only has 2 he won't. I just want one person to show me a dog that can SEE his mole to know how many hairs are in it.

The only smart thing I've ever heard anybody say about ALL dogs is that the best coondog on earth still licks his own butt and would screw his own momma if she's in heat.

I think thats a load of crap because looks are all in the genes and how a dog hunt is affected not only by genes passed from parents but also by their training.

A man I hunt with says that a walker that has a light pink nose and was pink inside the nose was more sensitive and had better cold tracking ability.

I REMEMBER BEING TOLD WHEN I GOT STARTED IN 84 I SHOULD LOOK FOR A PUP OR DOG THAT HAD A BLACK ROOF MOUTH AND REAR DEW CLAWS. I FINALLY FOUND ONE THAT HAD BOTH AND HE WAS AN IDIOT. I AM SURE THE MOUTH AND CLAWS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

Most of the people that really put faith in this stuff won't breed there female to a dog simply based on some of the stuff i mentioned in the first post.

Wow, I didn't know how widespread these beliefs were. I guess its everywhere, I usually just thought it was a bunch of crazy locals. It took me a few years of hunting to finally stand up for my own beliefs and call these out as a load of crap. Of course as a kid I didn't feel comfortable to tell an older guy he was wrong, but hey sometimes you just have to listen and smile. They don't mean any harm.

WHAT YA'LL THINK ABOUT THESE

"Full moon the coon don't like to be out becuase they feel like they can be seen easier thus, Dark night, hunting is better"

"Sow took her kits on a run to lose them from the dogs in the field, to spread them out so the hounds would chase the sow instead of the kits."

"The small ones jump from tree to tree, sometimes for a quarter mile."

With my old dog I do generally get a strike faster on a dark night as opposed to a full moon night. But i still tree coon either way.

I have actually been told that a sow would put her kittens up a tree and then move on and if the dog didn't come on and chase her and he pulled up and treed where the kittens were that the sow would come back and actually tease the dog and try to get the dog to chase her.

I haven't ever heard that last one.

Saw a coon one time hang on the side of a tree until the dogs got close then jumped and ran into a hole about an 1/8 of a mile away. Shined the tree it jumped from and saw 3 kitten coons.
