just keep in mind that if you CH or GRCH a dog too soon, they will have to compete with much older and more mature dogs. my advise (for what its worth), dont rush it. have fun with the dog, practice GAITING- very important, set them up on the ground and bench. take the dog w/ you to other events to get them used to the noise and surroundings. dont be in a hurry to finish a dog out.

Cynthia do you thank the rule should be 1yr old or 2 before
you show them.i dont have a problem with either 1 i am
going to hunt him either way.i would rather see it show
them till there 1 and then you have to hunt them,
dogs are way out of porportion these days for hunting.

Ok, you sound like my friend in North Carolina. I am going to ask you the same ? that I asked him and he couldnt come up with a logical answer so maybe you can.

How does woods time interfere with bench time?

It only takes about 20 minutes a day to practice a dog on the bench. Now you have 23 hours and 40 minutes to train for hunting. If you cant get a dog broke in the woods in that amount of time then you probably should get a different dog.

By the way, Cynthia is correct. I see alot of people take a 6 month old pup to a show and get beat by more mature older dogs for the breed or show and then they get mad and say they got screwed or the judge doesnt know what he is looking at, when in reality they brought a dog that is not as good as the older ones YET.

Personally I think they should open it back up and you should be able to show them as soon as they are willing to stand for you, like they used to years ago.

but then you have the same problem - a 3m or 4m old CANNOT 9 out of 10 times beat a more mature dog. so now you have a GRCH at 6 months (has been done yrs ago) and got this title at local club shows, and goes to AO, WC or somewhere big and gets their butt spanked. why? its still a puppy!!! if it were 11m and going against 6m old pups then yes it should probably win, but not against an older more mature more filled out dog.

I have an 8m old. I am not going to show her now. why? she is lanky and legs going everywhere. I did this with my redbone and had a GRCH at 10m. I learned my lesson. she could not compete with the mature dogs...hands down.

anyway, its your dog, do what you want with it, but regardless if you just show or hunt/show - MATURITY has a lot to do with how a dog handles in the woods and on the bench.

Some people don't like their show dogs dogs hunting as they get scratched up and look rough. Many judges will not place a dog that looks rough from hunting over a similar hound that is show slick.

The reason a pup has to be 6 months old before showing is because so many are almost perfect at 2,3,4, or 5 months that as they mature get completely out of the breed spec., get straight legs, sway backed, etc.

Maybe it would be the other way around... The people with the old dog might get spanked and get mad because it was a 4 month old that beat them.

I will use a great example of a young dog holding her own in the shows against mature older dogs -- GRCH 'PR' Tree Rizin Maine Edition which went from never shown to Grand Champion in her first 8 shows and all of them were Purina Points events. She was showing as a Grand at American Redbone Days this year and she wasnt even a year old yet.

The way I see it ... the entry fee is payed by the owner and if they want to put their dog in at 3 months old then so be it.

you've got a point, and not to pick on Katina's dog, but has she won with her since the Nat Redbone Days? She is a very nice dog and give her some time, she will be great. All I'm saying is, in your example, if she had waited for the dog to mature, she could have put a whooping on other females there. but the maturity level may not have been. we all (hopefully) learn from mistakes. I did that same thing with mine at 10mon. I wont do that again. but as before, 2 each his own. and good luck.

I believe Kat has only shown her twice since Redbone days. Once at AO and at the World.
