Put a muzzle on him. Most people wait till it's too late to break that habit. Your friend may be one of them.

A muzzle don't stop a dog from barking , it stops them from biting (chewing).

Just curious but how would you go about breaking one of doing it?

Well I have never tried the muzzle, it sounds like something worth trying.
I have always felt that chewing and tree jacking were two things you either live with or give the dog a new address because I personally have never seen either cured.

You always hear about the hog rings in the lip but I think anyone that sticks a bunch of hog rings in a dogs lip needs a hogring in their pecker cause they gotta be a first class numbnuts.

try spraying hot sauce on the tree and let him chew and don't give him any water for about 20 min. This seems to help but it has to be done about every 3 months.

I POSTED THIS EARLIER THIS MONTH,IT WORKS. TAKE ME SERIOUS BECAUSE I AM FIXING TO LET YOU IN ON A TRADE SECRET. THIS WILL SLOW HIM DOWN A LOT IF NOT CURE HIM ENTIRELY.JUST REMEMBER YOU LEARNED IT FROM ME.LOL. PUT A SHOCKING COLLAR ON YOUR DOG. DO NOT TURN IT UP OVER THE #2 SETTING. YOU WANT DISCOMFORT AND NOT A TOTAL FREAK OUT. NEXT YOU WILL NEED A SET OF TWO WAY RADIOS.THE SMALLER THE BETTER. BLACK TAPE THE TRANSMITTER BUTTON DOWN ON RADIO #1,THEN USE ZIP TIES TO ATTACH IT TO YOUR DOGS COLLAR. HAVE YOUR #2 RADIO TURNED ON AND CLOSE TO YOUR EAR,TURN HIM LOOSE WHERE HE WILL GET TREED FAIRLY CLOSE AND LISTEN TO YOUR RADIO. YOU CAN HEAR WHEN HE STARTS TO CHEW. BUMP HIM WITH THE COLLAR UNTIL CHEWING STOPS AND HE IS TREEING RIGHT. I PROMISE IT WORKS. I CAME UP WITH THIS,TRIED IT,PROVED IT TO A FRIEND AND NOW I AM PASSING IT ON TO YOU. IT HAS WORKED ON TWO OF MY PERSONAL DOGS AND A COUPLE OF BUDDY'S.IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU BUMP HIM WITHOUT BEING THERE.HENCE THE RADIOS. GOOD LUCK. PS. I HAVE ALSO USED THIS FOR FACE BARKING AND BLOWING.

common sense would tell you to spray the hot sauce on the tree after you get to it. If you hunt walkers though you can pretty well pick any tree and have good odds of the dog treeing on it

Maybe try putting black pepper on his nose. It will make him sneeze like in the cartoons. I don't know why this would help but it sure isn't as stupid as an idea of spraying him with amonia or hot sauce.

Good Luck

Why don't you spray yourself in the face with amonia and see if it gets your attention.

That has got to be some of the worse advise I've seen on these boards in a long time.

If these ideas are so stupid why don't you give us some of your own. I never mentioned spraying the dog in the face with hot sauce. If you would go back and read my post I said spray the tree with hot sauce. Let me guess.... you are some kind of tree hugger that thinks that would hurt the tree or the poor little coons feet when he comes down.

Easy there backnine. In my opinion, thes ideas are STUPID. In my opinion I think that once a tree chewer always a tree chewer. Deal with it or move on to another dog. Again that is my opinion. If you want to carry a gallon of taco sauce around the woods with you, go for it, it won't bother me.

Again this is my opinion take it for what it is worth.

I carried a small spray bottle one night and sprayed the tree he was chewing on. I didn't have any more trouble for about 4 months. I did it again one night and haven't had any trouble in the past 3 months and I hunt at least 5 nights a week. In my opinion this in no more cruel than sending several hundred volts through a dog for babbling or trashing.
