Dog eating and vomiting grass a lot

Yep, my old female is 10 years old. The last few months she has just constantly been eating and vomiting grass and has appeared to have very little energy, even for hot weather. Well about 7 days ago i switched from 21% protein dog food to 31% protein dog food and the grass eating has came to a stop. She also appears to have more energy. Could be a big coincidence but i don't think so. Any opinions?

I've heard others say hi protein causes some dogs to over heat. Personally I don't know since it is hot alot in the south. Maybe you got lucky, see if she is still doing good in a month, then you can tell if that was what she needed. A nutritional supplement might do the same thing and save money. I just recently learned some of the fox dog trialers shoot there dogs up for the big trials. Also I was told Vitamin B-12 with iron injected once a month would pep a dog up.

quite often dogs will eat grass because their stomach is hurting or upset, sounds like she wasn't getting along well with some ingredient in the feed she was supplied.

I don't know how true this is but I was told to feed our dogs some green beens that the green has some vitamin in it that the dogs lack in dog food.. So ours gets green bean 2 times a month
Just open the can and dump them in the feed ours just love it..

i was told something like that too. i was told that there is something in the grass that dogs lack in their regular feed but need. they vomit the grass after absorbing whatever it is they need because their digestive system can't handle the grass.

I have a police k-9 and he will graze like a cow on grass. He has been to the vet several times for check ups. The Dr. keeps saying he is fine.

I don't think they get anything from the grass. They must like to throw up! Mine will eat grass when hunting in the summer and I know they are getting the dew off the grass. I don't try and let mine eat the grass though.

Only god knows why they do the things they do!

I printed his off a site on the internet.

There’s a lot of debate about why dogs eat grass. Some dogs seem to act like mini lawnmowers, eating grass at every opportunity. Others dogs eat grass only occasionally, subsequently throwing it up.

So do dogs eat grass to throw up? This is a debatable issue. This wisegeek author has observed her dog fling himself at the door to get out to grass and eat a few mouthfuls, usually when his stomach is upset. He also appears to do it when he has something stuck in his throat. The end goal of the dog seems to be to throw up.

There actually appears to be two types of grass eating behavior in dogs. Some dogs take a few nibbles, while others eat quickly, barely chewing the grass. Unchewed grass often translates to near instant vomiting. Dogs that are careful grazers, on the other hand, may not get sick from grass.

The latter case suggests that some dogs eat grass because they enjoy it. Most dogs don’t need it to supplement their diets, but because dog diets are primarily made up of herbivores, that grassy taste may be reminiscent of the cattle or lamb product they had for dinner. Some dogs also enjoy green vegetables like broccoli.

If your dogs eat grass on a regular basis, this could suggest dietary imbalance, though many vets might dismiss it. You may want to consider giving the dogs some green vegetables if they appear to want “something green.” Cooking the vegetables first may make them more digestible, resulting in less vomiting.

It’s also important to be careful when your dogs eat grass regularly. Grass from manicured lawns can contain fertilizers and pesticides, which can be toxic to dogs. Instead of allowing “grazing” behavior on lawns, consider providing some doggy grass at home that is not treated with chemicals. Also, if your dogs eat grass all the time, don’t walk them on lawns that have been recently treated with chemicals. Most of these chemicals will break down in a few days, but during the first day or two after treatment, grass-eating behavior could translate to more than tummy upset.

If your dogs eat grass as a new behavior, and are exhibiting frequent vomiting, it’s also important to check with a vet. A dog that suddenly begins to have a taste for grass may be trying to compensate for gastrointestinal problems. This could signify viral or bacterial infections and might require veterinary treatment. On the other hand, when dogs eat grass only occasionally, you can chalk this up to normal canine behavior. A mouthful of grass or two may mean cleaning up some nasty dog messes, but it is unlikely to signify poor dietary health or illness.

Grazing...

...My german shep. dogs only ate grass to barf... my first experience with grazers was my greyhounds. They eat a very different diet from normal dogs when they come off the track. We fed some dry kibble and a mix of rice, meat and vegetables home cooked and some raw... I was very concerned when the first one ate SOOO much grass! I asked the vet who said not to worry but we did extensive bloodwork over the years(all fine)... He would eat LONG grass to barf rarely, short grass just before pooping as if to stimulate his bowels and sometimes would nibble before a meal. The second did the same...then we got our first coonhound... she didnt' eat grass but devoured dandelions. The next one(my bluedawg, still living)... grazes all day, eats some grass, some clover, LOTS of honey bees... and only barfs after eating a rare bit of long grass... the BnT(also still with us) eats grass but nothing else, he will also barf with long grass and often eats grass before he poops... if he is REALLY hungry cause we're late to feed he'll eat long grass and barf....
Coyotes and wolves eat vegetation of all sorts, fruits and of course raw meat.... I even see evidence on our property that yotes sometimes eat long grass and barf it up.... they eat apples, critters and grass... kinda like dogs-
Jason, If Princess is doing this an awful lot at her age I'd bring her in for some bloodwork at the vet just to be on the safe side.
Good luck, HappyHunting! Heather

AMEN!

LIKE FOR EXAMPLE, WE WERE ROAD HUNTING LAST WEEKEND RIGHT NEXT TO THE LITTLE TENNESSEE RIVER.

THERE WAS A MUDHOLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, AND EVERY DOG WE HAD OUT STOPPED TO DRINK OUT OF IT.

NOW TELL ME, WHY, DO THEY DO THIS? WITH A PERFECTLY GOOD, FRESH, RUNNING RIVER 10 FOOT AWAY, WILL THEY DRINK OUT OF THAT NASTY, STAGNANT, OILY, GOD KNOWS WHAT ELSE HAS FALLED OR DRIPPED INTO IT MUHOLE?

Does sound like the other food just didn't agree with her tummy! Good thing we don't eat grass when we don't feel so good....LOL...

Give the old gal a pat from me, Heather
