I think if majority of the cast sees it happen then the dog should be scratched as long as the "person" didnt provoke it.

whats sad is that this even has to be an issue to begin with. Because sorry people hunt and breed those types of dogs.

if it was my dog, and he bit someone unprovoked. i wouldn't need a rule. that dog wouldn't live see the inside of my dog box.

and if i was walking by someone's hound and i got bit...lord help that dog, and anyone who tries to say anything about it. just for the simple fact that that could have been a kid. my kid or yours.

dead.

Needs to be a rule about what to do with the IDIOTS that bring this type of dog to a hunt or show to begin with!!!!!! It may have been this dogs first time doing it but I doubt it...Now we are raising mean bench show dogs lol....Meanest acting one I ever saw was at a bench show.

This isn't a situation that needs another rule. Every state has a biting dog law. In Indiana if a dog bites someone, the dog is required by law to be immediately confined for 14 days.
That is how you handle that situation. Your dog bites me, you can withdraw immediately and confine your dog or I will call the law and they will confine the dog. Your choice.

SHOULD THERE BE A RULE FOR BITTING DOGS

I judged a PKC cast several years back and we had a dog that would bite you or the owner when you got close to the tree. I had heard that he would at the clubhouse before we drew out but I didn't think much about it because you allways hear rumors of one kind or another and I've learned a lot of the time it's just sour grapes. Well this time it was true. The first tree the dog bit a cast member in the arm. I thought it was just the excitement so I let it slide. The next tree he bit me. I told the young man if his dog bit any one again he would be scratched and he withdrew him. So I would say the judge could use his discretion and scratch the dog after a warning.

Bench rule #12 dog will be disqualified for growing, snapping, or fighting and be written up. I've seen dogs disqualified for trying to bit the judge. I always figured that was why the snapping word was included in the rule. During a nite hunt I would think the dog showed aggression. 6b When the aggressive dog is known scratch the aggressor only. To me biting is an act of aggression.

i think this should be even a bigger deal than a dog fight at the tree, because like Drew said this could have been a child! i personally dont believe a dog should bite a person for any reason, but for a dog to just tear into someone like that for no reason whats so ever is absolutly uncalled for! if this were a child walking by a dog like this could have grabbed his or her and really caused some damage- this is absolutly unacceptable.... no respectable houndsmen would wish somthing like that upon anyone so please- DO NOT take mean dogs to public places!!! and you know just as well as everyone else if your dog is mean... think of the consiquences!!! if you take a dog to a hunt grounds that dog and its actions is your responsibility, we have a hard enough time keeping up our good hard earned reputations as it is with peta idiots floating around, lets not start ruining it ourselves... this kind of bone head move could actually HURT someone- and not just a little scratch, this could effect somone for the rest of their lives!

I am sure that a few of you have read my opion on a mean dog, but this case is in my opion you have 2 opotions (depending on bad of situtation) This dog needs to go a professional dog trainer and checked out if the trainer has any doubt ,I would think of finding someone to take him as a pet but if theres a chance in bitting people or kids he would have to be put down, I hope I never have a dog that bites someone it would suck.

Several years ago, I was judging a bench show. There was a beautiful hound that should have won if just conformation were taken into consideration; however, he made the fatal mistake of growling at me (the licensed official). Not only did I not choose the dog, I wrote him up for aggressive behavior. This was before an actual rule was put into place. I did send his information to UKC and basically had to use the rule for attempting to fight. As a master of hounds, I would support any cast who scratched a dog for such behavior. This is supposed to be a sport in which fun is had and people pay hard earned money to participate. They shouldn't have to feel intimidated when going to get their hounds from a tree.

I've no time for a mean dog. You might get bit by accident when a dog is excited, or maybe if you did something to make them mad. I understand that. If a dog bit me for no reason at all it would be the last thing he ever did.

i sort of agree with jim. if before a hunt it would be hard to put any rule twards a dog, but you can use the law. in illinois a dog bites once its a 200 fine+court cost 10 days confinment at the vet pluss the vet bill(if dog is not current on rabies vac). second offence $300 fine+court cost +the rest. the third time the dog gets put down no questions asked.. thats steep enough i would think twice. just my two cents.

i think it should be a general UKC rule, just as no drinking and no drugs at UKC events, there should be no agression (biting) of dogs tward people... its dangerous and unacceptable behavior for a dog to bite/attack people wheather its treed, on a bench, or tied to the back of a truck!

I have seen a few hard tree dogs that woul;d grab you if you tried to walk between them and the tree if they were on a leash, or if you tried to pat them on the side. None of them bit to hurt and the two i have hunted the most with i never saw even remotely attempt to fight at the tree. Go figure.
