I have 8 month old pup thats doing a pretty good job goes hunting pretty good treeing a couple coon by his self. I hunt him 2-3 times a week 3-5 drops a night. Wanna no if Iam huntin him to much, not enough, or just enough. First time training a pup. Thanks for the help.

How often depends on you and him. I, personally, would not hunt him 3 or 4 drops a night, unless they are very short drops. At his age, I would not hunt him 'til he is overly tired. Let him leave the woods wanting to hunt more. Be careful to keep him wanting to go to the woods. Save the extra hard hunts for a little later in his education.

I just went throgh this and some folks on here gave me some very very good advice. Better to hunt a dog that age an hour a night for 5-6 nights rather than a long time for a couple nights. IT is great to end on a good note, but just don't keep pushing if it doesn't end up that way. Once he gets a little older maybe like a year start to ramp it up and see what happens. I can tell when mine has had too many nights in a row. He gets tired and lazy and I take him home at that point. When the pup hits about 18 months to 2 years you can hunt him as much as you can stand.

Keep it fun for you and him and it will all shake out in the end.

I would add that it never hurts to hold them back, but it can hurt to push them forward.

Always leave a pup wanting a whole lot more than it had.

Remember with a pup that young, it may not be mentally mature enough to handle other situations that comes it's way while hunting, such as coyotes, a bad fall, stick in the eye, the list is a long one!

I like t hold them back until a year to a year and a half...but that's just me. I've never been in a hurry with a dog. It is awesome when you have an early starter though!

I try to hunt my pups for an hour or the first coon whichever comes first. Once they get around 10 months old I feel they can handle the harder hunting.

These guys gave some good advice the only thing I’d add is this. I’d hunt the pup alone at least two drops each week. Hunting a pup alone does more good than anything else I can think of. He may not wanna leave if other dogs are in the truck and you may have to walk him in there a little to get him started going alone but now is the time to show him he don’t need company. Normally after a young pup strikes a few tracks with them other dogs in the truck they get on to it. At his age I’d be careful not to give him too many coon but he should get one now and then when he’s done it right and done it alone. One coon that he treed his self is worth more than 20 that were treed with the help of another dog. Good luck with your pup.

Thing that most impress me about this pup is the few times i did cut him loss with older dogs he always gets buy him self. He has never treed with another dog. He dont care what the other dogs are doing like he dont even hear them. Every coon he has treed has been completly alone no help at all, I think they were probaly hot coon because he dont tree every time I cut him loss. He always gets struck in but cant always finish the track.

i took my puppy out with her mama the other afternoon she is 6 months old i figured she would stick with her but no she went her own direction she didnt care wat the other dog was doin she didnt tree nothing or bark at anything she went out threw the woods sniffing at every other tree she is just like her daddy just will not hunt with other dogs
